Snow - A Potential Business Opportunity?

It's getting colder and after the harsh winters of the past few years it may not be long until it snows. Not ideal weather for outdoor jobs but for some professional landscapers it's offered up a new opportunity - snow-clearing!

If you already own a BCS power unit then you can just attach the appropriate snow-clearing implements and you're all set up!

If it sounds of interest, get in touch and we'd be happy to give you a demo.

  • Will this attach to my camon c8?
  • I cant see how that thing would ever pay itself off let alone make any sort of profit seeing as we only get a few days of snow per year here in the UK.

Perhaps in NI where it is milder, you may not but don't dismiss before doing some sums.

For the last three years many ground/landscape maint businesses have made significant income from gritting and snow clearances which has ensured they operate and pay themselves 12 months of the year and have busy schedules.

Given it is a mutli function machine you look wider at how these pieces of kit can be used. I know how successful one LJN member has been using their Avant's machines clearing schools, car parks etc but outside of winter they use them in hard landscape projects etc

    Interesting Met Office Stats:

    Snow:

The UK gets on average 33 days of snow fall or sleet a year (1971 - 2000) - so this stat must now be higher given recent events ?

On average across the UK there's 16.5 days a year when snow is on & stays on the ground.

Extremes : average of 27.7 days in Scotland to ~11 days in Cornwall with snow on the ground.

The higher your location the more extreme/likely the occurrence will be.

    Ground frost:

Average of 50 ground frost 'events' per year in the southern part of UK that would call for gritting to take place...

So some averages there to help formulate a business plan ;-)

Hi as Gary says there is definitely the potential to make money, we got into winter maintenance about four years ago, seriously getting into it two years ago. The first year I bought a snow plough to fit my Agria rotavator, cost me approx £300, great bit of kit, more than paid for its self in the first year. And kept us working when otherwise we would have been scratching our heads. We are now set up to plough, conventional grit and liquid treat acre after acre. It ensures we are just as busy in winter as in summer, we average about 70 nights per year with our contracts, plus snow clearance on top.

The important thing is to have conracts set up properly to ensure that it is going to be a profitable venture.

However be warned it is a tough game, long and sometimes very cold, it's hard on equipment, a lot of prep time is required to ensure that when the snow comes everything is ready to rock.
  • Hi, yes you can fit a few different snow clearing attachmetns to the Camon C8. There is a 60cm Snow Blower, 100cm Snow Plough & an 80cm Power Brush. We also now have available a Salt Spreader to fit onto the C8.

  • We thought it might be useful to share our tips on managing snow and ice. Click here to read on!

  • I do snow clearing. I wouldn't be able to justify spending money on a dedicated unit though.

  • If any of you do have a snow blowing attachment and want to work for Ground controls award winning winter maintenance services please contact me direct

  • Unfortunately we have barely had a single frost here in Ayr so I still have 2 huge piles of rock salt and grit salt. If anyone wants it at a good price and can collect please let me know.
