To answe your question I'm afraid that it's just a matter of trial and error. I've used all sorts and still resort to a strimmer with very very great attention paid to the usage of said item. I don have a very old pair of think they're called scissor shears effectively one piece of metal with a circle at the end which acts as a spring. I keep them razor sharp and they seem to do the job. But it's very tedious and hugely time consuming. Also kills my hand!

I think in this case:
1/ too many
2/ may be too heavy
3/ likely to come across this problem again.

I bought a pair of Spear & Jackson long handled grass shears. They are light & cut well. Useful around small trees etc &............you don't have to bend down
