I used to use AVG but it slowed my computer.
I moved over the Microsoft Security Essentials (I' not a fan of MS but I was persuaded by online reviews). I have to say I've been impressed and I've certainly not noticed any problems with speed.
Personally I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials be backed up by maleware bytes anti-malware which is free (for just a scanner and an anti-exploit guard that runs with your browser and helps to protect against erenous links etc. but that is all you need if also using MSE) or if you want some more secure protection NOD32 is quite highly regarded.
We use NOD32 by Eset - http://www.eset.co.uk/Home.
It is light on system resources and has so far seemingly kept us protected!
