Stihl's quality has reduced over the years ( maybe due to production location ? ) with many silly faults occurring and are no longer first and only choice. Most Contractors now have mixture, selecting what's best for particular task.
Key to me would be Dealer support if you're a Pro user (whether echo or Stihl ).
Check their spares holding, are the Techs good / experienced on the makes. What's the workshop turn around ?
Don't be afraid of asking for a demo.
I only use Echo, Combi tool & strimmer, work great. Would buy again.
I don't worry too much about dealer support now if I'm honest as you can get spares online if needs be. And 99% of faults I can fix myself if I can get the spare bits. I know not everyone can fix stuff so it depends how good with the spanners you are I suppose.
So Dealer support is still key I'd suggest
But more to the point is that if it breaks in the warranty you take it back don't you? Unless the dealer is hopeless and it's an easy fix.
Which is a good job because the local Stihl dealer is mainly geared up for agri work so if you can't fix yourself you may as well buy a new one unless it's mid winter.
So I think I disagree to a certain extent. In principle I agree in practice it's much quicker to fix it myself.
I can order bit online or on the phone they are here next day and put them on. Meanwhile I'm still working instead of driving to drop the thing off and go fetch it again.
"I'm tempted by the echo stuff as it has a 2 year commercial warranty at least on the decent(expensive) stuff." ?
So you'd be happy to foot the bill for any repairs during the Warranty yourself, which negates the benefit of selecting gear based on Warranty.
For example , common Stihi faults - Ignition coils, on/off switches/4-mix engine issues....and more...
So it doesn't make it pointless to buy the gear based on warranty if you see what I mean?
I won't buy the 4 mix stuff because in my opinion it's a stupid idea and having heard of all the faults it seems daft! I think I must have been lucky with my gear as I don't get many breakages.
