Rotary Spreaders - Guidance

For past couple of years we've used 2 Scott Edgeguard Rotary spreaders, but one has just broken so we are looking for a replacement. I have liked the Edgeguards as we've got used to calibrating them ( with initial settings from the scotts product range ) and have remained pretty constant when using other brands depending on prill size. Do we replace with like for like ? What are the benefits of the Scott's SR 2000 type of product - better spread, better calibration ( or do you go straight from rates on bags ) ? Any other recommendations ?

  • Probably not much help Gary, I use just a basic Scotts rotary, but avoid the '3 in one' treatments thus avoiding any problem with weedkiller on the borders. We use a basic fertilizer only and a spray herbicide for the weed treatment.  I am also wary of the calibrations, so have marked up a filling bucket, so I only put enough in the hopper for the lawn I am treating, set the spreader at half flow and give the lawn two passes at 90deg. Works for me, but I'm just an old fashioned boy!

    Hi Gary,

We supply but don't list the Accupro and SR2000 spreaders - good quality bits of kit. the SR2000 has the same benefits as the Accupro but with the flap down side deflectors and a more rugged frame. day in day out use they will last plus you have the ease of pre-set calibrations with their fertilisers.

However, if you are not beholden to their ferts and perhaps use is limited to a few applications a month, we have some good non-branded spreaders. A bit more basic but rugged pneumatic tyres and consistent spread pattern - just calibrate as normal, but  for a whole lot less money: see particularly the PG25 and PG60

Thanks Richard, will take a look.

Colin, me to :) it's an 'age thing'....

Given we mainly deal with business parks etc, we have managed well for several years with those ones, so in no immediate rush to spend multiple times more unless there a major major benefits.

However, we are starting to do more and more 'lawn care' hence the question.....
      • ....and us Gary.......so I am looking to buy a Lawn aerator this season. Looking at a new Camon LA20 to add to our equipment, at about £1,800 +VAT

Would be interested to hear what you buy......

As an aside, we use a Camon LS Scarifier, in fact we just got a new set of blades to fit.

Gary I went from a Scott Edgeguard Rotary spreader to a SR 2000 & haven't regretted it for a minute.

However as you know the cost between the two is colossal and unless you were using it on a daily basis I would probably say go for a cheaper model, that being said if the SR 2000 is being looked after it should last a long time and getting parts for it should be easier enough down the line if required.

After use each day I apply WD40 to the fertiliser outlet as it requires regular lubrication or the little hatch doesn't always open properly...

If your applying lots of fertiliser that has Iron (FE) added I would say get a spreader that has an edge guard, but if your not then it may not be worth the extra spend....

      Thanks Robbie, really useful comments.

I think you have also identified an issue; in that if I were the only user I might spend out more knowing I would be keeping it in tip-top condition. Add 'employees.....'

Anyone know what the 'Dark Side' Franchises use ?

I know (in my area) greensleeves use the SR 2000 and greenthumb use an Earthway... I think the latter is a C22HD

Again, it's worth thinking about the end product coming out of the spreader, if your not applying FE it may not be worth the extra few £££ getting an edge guard....
