Ride On Mowers

I´ve been asked to quote to cut a large well kept lawn. Client has had one guy in last year and dropped him because he didn´t do a good job. Mower would´t reach the edges of the walled area and gardener left the edge trimmings, plus on wet cuts he couldn´t pick up so he removed the collector and left the grass to spread, leaving yellow grass looking uncared for.

Forearmed is forwarned, I can do a better job if I use the right mower and ensure the edges are raked out after strimming.

Plot is about 2.2 acres, and around 1.8 acres of that is lawn. Middle section has tress, plenty of them about 2m tall with a 600mm diameter grass cut out in each. Mower will need to go around each one.

Client says it takes him about 2 1/2 hours with his Lawnflite 703, that´s a 36" deck. Does that sound about right?

I´m thinking of charging for a 3 hour visit, but what mower? I´ve read of the Etisia´s ability in the wet, even used they so much money, more than I have and I´m looking up to about a grand.

Is there anything out there worthy of buying, I see it being a cracking job and there is plenty of work to follow so worth the investment.

Be careful a grand is not enough for a decent ride on collector mower IMO even second hand.
Think how much a decent walk behind is.
You might pick an old kubota up but it will be at the end of its life.
    Same for Westwood etc.
Though a Westwood with the sweeper collector would be a good choice for not that much money second hand.
  • Hmmm.....thanks Richard, this equipment lark just goes on and on.

Take your point though, I started with a cheap Hayter this April, old wide chute variety, 4 or 5 weeks and I was annoyed with it´s foibles and maintenance,  scrapped it off and bought a used Honda roller, then my first new one, an Izy.

To justify more than a grand I could do with at least two jobs to keep it busy, what sort of money do you think I should be looking at?

Personally I think that's a waste of time collecting. Cut weekly with a side discharge and you won't see any clippings on the top.

Again i wouldn't collect that, is it weekly cuts? if so mulch it, get a used Stiga with the out front deck. i bought one this year for 2 jobs, now its used on 6 jobs. You can also buy attachments for them, just got a road sweeper for mine so instead of sat around in winter it will be earning money.

  • 2 weekly has been talked about, nothing agreed yet.

  • How are ride ons with undulating grass? I have another job a ride on could do, replacing walk behinds, but it is quite up and down and I thought the size of the deck would cause problems

Big decks can cause problems. That's why the really big machines have 3 decks or more so they can cope.
      Maybe try a hayter conder.
I know it does not collect but it's s cylinder so will leave a decent enough finish. You could pick a decent one up for you budget.
      Just a thought
      • I have a Condor Richard, it does leave a good finish, blooming speedy on full throttle too!

Client asking for grass collecting left the Condor out of the running.

A cheapo ride on probably will be fixed but many ride on's have anti scalp wheels and 'float' to a degree which makes them basically as likely to scalp as a 21 inch.
