Planting depth in raised sleeper beds

What I'm after doing is building a raised sleeper bed approx 8m x 1m height. I'm looking to plant large rootballed laurels in the bed approx 1m width and 2.5m tall. My worry is will they do well or will they be restricted given time possibly causing damage to the sleepers with the roots. There is a leylandi hedge in my neighbours garden at present but the previous owner of the house I've bought has butchered the face of the hedge and cut right into it, so it looks a mess hence wanting to plant another hedge in front, your help is appreciatedThanks
