Backpack / hand held: PA1, PA6 and take the W option with PA6 for working near water - this would include rivers, streams, ponds, ditches etc. Well worth having.
Access to the professional products is worthwhile if you've the volume to use - only treating a handful of lawns will not make them very cost effective unless you stick to using only a small number of products.
You also need PA4 to apply granular products. It's mad, but they divide the certificates up in to each area so you need more courses!
Hi Andrew,
Doing a Pesticide course is definately 'the right thing' as well as 'the legal thing' . I should imagine the majority of your work will be with a knapsack so yes, the PA1 (pre-requisite) and the PA6 would be perfect. There are a number of training establishments all over the country (including ours!) offering these courses - and more.
Its two days and costs approx £250 + local assessment fees which are tax deductible work expenses. It allows you to offer clients little bits extra around the house; like moss spraying on patios & drives, insecticide spraying on vegetation and hedges as well as total and selective herbicides for lawns or driveways...It won't teach you what product to use or where (thats where we can help) but gives you a platform to confidently apply them. Plus if you get into commercial maintenance its something they will demand.
If you message or email me we can see where your nearest training centre would be....
Regards
Richard

See my last post on the PA6 course. Could your firm advise/supply the equipment I refer to (by Thursday!).
Thanks.
Andrew
Here's a simple walk thru flowchart explaining when Certification is needed.
Although not necessary / needed for all lawn care products, the PA1/PAn does stand you in good order to understand how to calibrate, handle products and equipment correctly etc and is a must if using pesticides commercially.
If you use the search facility (orange icon, top right of screen), you will find a huge amount of information, discussion and guidance on the subject.
Isn't PA4 only applicable for trailered or mounted granules, and pesticide only.
Yes, agree. PA6 or the newer NPTC L2 qualification covers pedestrain hand held equipment (includes granules or pellets)
Thanks, I thought granular was separate but that's good to know. :-)
