New tools

I am looking for a supplier of good quality hand tools as we seem to have run out of forks! I was thinking of investing in bulldog tools but wondered if there is a better alternative?

  • hi Tony hope all's well.  I don't think such a supplier really exists.  Most tools are made for using not abusing, so you might as well go reasonably cheap and cheerful, and accept that things don't last forever; in the world of forks and spades at least.  Bulldog are good though. I had some kind of strapped trenching fork which was very strong and heavy and lasted years, but in the end I even ruined that by digging up too many trees and jumping on it. Since then I've spent reasonable money and it hasn't been worth it, so I aim to get another one of those and get good at rehandling my old spade heads, as it goes against the grain to just chuck them away.  It all depends on what you want from your tools I suppose.

Thanks for the advice John, I think I'm just going to have to teach my apprentice not to lever them so hard!!! I can recommend bulldog as I have a few tools and they are unbelievably tough!!

Maybe invest in a 5ft crow bar for levering, like the Draper Ground buster

how about a Spear & Jackson Neverbend spade

  • I'm always surprised they get away using that product name given they DO in fact bend/break, no tougher than the average in my experience.

My favourite brand for tools is Fiskars as the handles tend to be long and comfy and quality is better than average. Saying that I can't remember the last time I got the digging fork out! The spade gets used a little more often, but certainly not daily or even weekly :)  Good hoes and pronged cultivators get used a lot though. My hoe is a reticulating hoe, plus a swoe for scraping duties on blockwork and the like. Bahco for cutting hand tools, though I do use traditional felco secs as they are not plasticky. Most tools have to be looked after though, if I had an ape working for me I'd be inclined to give him a roadworkers gravel rake and a solid mattock at the most!
