How to kill moss on tarmac?

Hi

One of my lawn customers asked me would i be able to deal with the moss on his tarmac driveway?

The area is around 100m2.

Do you just apply a liberal amount of MMC Pro (5L) and it will sort it out?

What about the run off, will the MMC Pro kill grass from a run off?

Does the moss just die away or will it take further work to remove the moss after you kill it?

I would apply MMC Pro to saturation. In my experience it does not tend to run off too much but contact with the grass should be avoided.

Again, in my experience small i stations just tend to disappear after a few weeks, otherwise you might need to mechanically remove.

    Hope this helps.

    Nick.

Would iron not leave a stain?

Yes, Iron sulphate would stain drives etc and is normally the reserve of dealing with moss on lawns etc.

Best bet for hard surfaces such as drives is always one of the biocides like MMC, Qualgex or similar

The majority of moss, once treated, can be scraped off by careful use of a square mouth shovel if surface is in reasonable conditions

Alternatively some form of mechanical power brush works well :-)

  • Numerous products on the market that all work fairly well.
Best advice I could give is:-
Remove areas that are thick with moss via hoe or other suitable tool, as it wont kill off moss that is 10mm thick.
Use sprayer so avoid applying excess and limit run off as most products will scorch grass.
Try to apply in dry/mild conditions. I think these murky but dry days we have had recently are actually good days to apply.
If the area is shady expect to apply more than once per year! Maybe Nov and Feb.

  • Whatever you do, don't even think about using iron surface..... it stains the tarmac a very unsightly brown and the customer will be very upset!! Many years ago, I made this mistake.... the only solution to the staining was to overspray the tarmac with a mixture of Unibond and black masonry paint which worked very well!!
I now use the MMC which is very effective....... I usually reckon a 5l of concentrate will treat 200 sq metres........ if there is really heavy moss patches, I run the strimmer over it and then blow it into a corner to pick up...... then spray the whole area. The instructions are definite that it must be applied in dry conditions so I always spray it after several rainfree days..... I've got some spray onto adjacent grass in the past which has not damaged it at all. The moss will then take a few weeks to completly die off to a yellowish colour where it seems to mysteriously disappear over the following few months.

  • I use soda crystals that you'd put in your washing machine, 95pence per kg from tesco. kills off moss in about 2 days then a stiff brush after a week of get rid of the dead moss. have tried diff concentrations but generally 2kg in 8 litres of water works well. just dilute and either use a sprayer or a watering can, up to you.

doesn't kill grass off either if you accidentally have overspray onto lawned areas.

  • I'd go along with all of this.

I'm just curious would you guys add a guarantee of no moss returning for 6 months with the correct dose rate?
