Long reach hedge trimmer

Hi there, hope everyone enjoyed the sun today. Just wanted to see if anyone can throw a bit of advice my way. I want to get a long reach hedge trimmer on the weekend, was wondering if anyone has any advice on makes. I've always used Stihl for trimmers, strimmers and blowers but was wondering what makes are just as good but possibly cheaper, I'm looking at around £500 to £600 to spend. Any ideas would be great. • Stihl HL100 is what i use, wouldnt consider any other makes.

  • i have an echo hca265es. i'm pleased with it, i use it as much as my regular hedge trimmer, but it doesn't get heavy use. it's less powerfull than i would like, but goes through most stuff quite happily.

afraid i can't compare it to any other machine as it's the only one i've actually used.

  • Thanks for feedback! Do either of you know anything about Husqvarna or Kawasaki? Also, Chris, have you tried the Stihl Kombisystem? I would imagine not suitable for commercial use, what do you think?

I have three stihl trimmers and a kawasaki kcl525a.

The kawasaki is slightly shorter, slightly higher vibrations but is a much faster and lighter machine to use.

It's the one that the guys pick every-time over the stihls.

Hi nick do you still have the Kawasaki trimmer?
I'm after some new long reach cutters with weight being my greatest concern.
  • I used to run a shindaiwa long reach and it was great until getting parts appeared to be a problem for my repair shop. I tried the Husky 327he4 which was way too heavy - I'm fairly strong but not that strong - weighed a ton. I ended up with the Echo hca265es like Stuart. It's ok. Not as powerful as I'm used to and doesn't seem to rev as quick. It also doesn't have the ability to be adjusted with one hand like the shindaiwa which I feel is a massive benefit. It is a real pain having to put the whole thing down to then adjust it with two hands!

I own the Shindaiwa multi tool (long reach hedge trimmer / chainsaw), I have found it to be very good. Echo now owns them, a lot of the parts can be sourced from them...

  • Thanks for all advice, much appreciated!
  • why are the blades on long reach trimmers only ever 60cm? i'd kill for one twice that length for wide hedges.

  • I think then the dynamic weight gets silly and horribly unbalanced, also the need for a higher torque and therefore bulkier and heavier gearbox.
