Forget the bag on a lawn with thatch/moss that as been prepped correctly you will be emptieing the bag avery 3 meters on some lawns, get one of these( Fiskers 135570 large lawn rake)and plenty of empty tonne builders bags, I use a Camon LS42 from E-bay this will be its 3rd year cost me around £300 getting ready for new blades now never let me down, on the cheaper new end I belive the Wolf Garten petrol scarifier is a OK bit of kit for the price.
Lawn cut, then scarify, petrol stihl blow-rake then go over again with the mower to suck remaining bits up, even makes a messy job look quite tidy when done.
Thanks for the tips.
My lawns are very small, so got an electric scarifier/aerator from Lidl. It was around £45? Yes, you may laugh but it does the job for me. Only use it about 5 or 6 times a year. The bag ended up in the skip after 2 minutes first use. Absolutely pathetic. I raked up the mess. But will go over now with a lawn mower too. Customers were first horrified, but it looked really lush 3 weeks later.
i find that if it has a collection bag it tends to get chucked to the back of the shed, as you do not get very far before stopping to empty it. ( it gets annoying) i have a slit Tine one.
for the price you want to pay go second hand make shore the blades or bearings are not worn out but if the price is right they can be replaced

This is the only scarifier that you need to look at. This is the newer model to mine, I know of 3 other contractors in my area and we all swear by them.
As others have said forget about the bag of the machine total waste of time.
Hope this helps
With a budget of £300? It's the only one he doesn't need to look at!
I have a dori 520, superb scarifier, built like a tank. If you can get a used one you might get it for that sort of price.

I brought Einhell BG-SC 2240P Petrol Lawn Scarifier at the start of the season and it's been fanastic, never missed a beat, starts first pull and built with the usual German eye for detail and high standards.
