In Praise of an Izy !

As you know I recently bought a little 16 inch Izy as a second/light mower. After a week of use I am almost in love. We have had continual heavy rain here. I have managed to cut three really wet lawns with the Honda as it is very light. It's easy to increase the revs & with a 4.5hp 16" it has lots of power. It now goes like a rocket !.So strange to use a light fast mower after years of mainly using a very heavy 21" Pro Roller. I will need to go on a muscle building course in the Spring when I go back to a big mower. There is very little time difference in using it on small/medium gardens against the Pro as turns are so quick & I can start it with a little finger !.I had planned to sell it in the Spring but it will be staying.

  • That's good to know. I'm looking for something to twin with my 21" John Deere for smaller gardens as I don't want to try and lug the beast through houses or do footery wee gardens with it.
  • I got mine for €230 on ebay as a graded model (grade A - never been used, ex display) with full Honda warranty etc (only 3 months commercial !). The only downside so far is the small grassbag. It's just cut my back lawn which was wet, long & covered in leaves.

I got mine here & they were excellent:

    They have a 21" Izy for £299 !
  • Sorry for the resurrecting of a very old thread, but I was just wondering how you increased the revs on the izy? I just got one myself, and I can't find anything about it on the net.

Yeah you can, I did it on mine, but you have to be really careful on how much you adjust it, I'm talking a point of a millimetre, if no one has replied by later I will try to explain, super hectic this end today mate... Cheers Harry
    • I just adjusted the screw at the bottom of the throttle linkage.  At full throttle there is a plate that rests against a screw.  Screwing it in increases the revs

  • Cheers guys, I think I can sort it out now. Thanks for your help.

      Is it a new one?
As they have changed slightly as Honda has removed the screw!! You have to twist a bolt round! Don't go too mad with it though or you will strain the engine!!
      • Yes it is a new one, there is no screw any more as you said. Harry pointed me in the direction of a youtube vid that explains it. Just waiting for a tachometer before I get the spaners out :)

        Here's the video:

        • I didn't bother with a tacho.  I just adjusted mine until I had a good walking speed. I have always increased the revs on Hondas & never had a problem.

The engines are governed down to comply with noise regs & a slow walk speed.  Many Honda engines aren't set at peak power.

  • Yes they are great. I started my gardening / handyman business 5/6 years ago and started with an 18 inch push Izy. I changed it for the sake of changing it earlier this season. I bought a Honda HRX 476 self propelled mulching mower. It cost me just over £800, so double the Izy. In truth whilst I love the HRX in particular as it mulchs a couple of my larger commercial jobs, I cant really see why it costs double the IZY. Ive still got my Izy in the shed as I cant part with it ! My Izy ran perfectly for 5 years with only basic oil, filter, plug changes etc. I agree it has a smaller collection box but, the shoot is bigger than the HRX so collects wet grass better in my opinion.

    All the best

    Gaz
