  • Rocking this year!

Just told someone we have no empty slots until mid September.

Yeah really good! I've only got availability as I've recently taken on a new employee and extra van and even with price increases I'm getting heaps of work.
  • full into October with landscaping work and plenty in the pipeline with an increased work force!

  • Strange year for me on contract maintenance.

Very early start, and the spring lost me a fortune as the growth was exceptional. Now it's drought conditions my workload is ridiculously easy, and I'm actually clearing leaves this week.

Things have slowed down a bit but I've got to get the regular hedge cuts sorted out soon so that will fill my time for a while.

  • Slow for me, put it down to Facebook as every Tom Dick and idiot seems to be working for between £5- £10 ph lots on there doing waste/garden clearances without waste carriers licences, or as in one case doing private work and then putting the waste into his day time jobs truck for the council

I must admit, I have never advertised on social media, especially Facebook. I know of lots of companies who have, it always attracts (mainly) the wrong type of customer. People who want to pay as little as possible.

        Plus one

    • I was loading my gear onto the trailer after a lawn cut this morning and two young lads drifted by on bikes, one carrying a pair of shears and the other carrying a broom. First thing I did was checked it wasn't my shears and broom :)

On my way to the next job I passed a house and there they were in the front garden, grafting away with the shears and broom. They're probably in that price bracket you mention, but with those overheads they'll be doing ok for beer money. Cracking day today as well so their tans were topping up while working.

    • Jason, why are you trying to compete with the lowest-level workers for the lowest-paying clients?

Online advertising is the worst way to promote a small business IMO. The worst of the local "caravan-dwelling" tree surgeons near me all have convincing websites and Check-A-Trader accounts with 100% feedback.

I can't compete with the illegal workers, so I don't bother. Sell yourself as a professional trader with all the training and licenses, and when all else fails throw the CRB card in to the quote. I have my client's gate codes, and am around their family every week. I've always found that people want to trust their regular visitors, and it's surprising to see their thought process when you say you are CRB-approved.
