Garden maintenance tender advice

Hi guys,I've just been offered a tender for maintenance at a local property. The tender document is broken down into what is required and when, which I assume is standard. It then asks for 'amenity cost' and 'LH cost' per bulletpoint. Can anyone help me out with what these mean please? Many thanks

  • I have quoted for many such properties/units and quite often you are sent a generic tender form (often lifted from the internet) of which half of the items do not apply the that particular job. I just tender, bullet pointing all items that are applicable. If in doubt, just ask and get into conversation, never too early to get a personal relationship going!

  • I had a quick search of Google and I cannot for the life of me find out what Amenity Cost means, as for LH Cost, that pops up a few times as "Labor-Hour Cost" which due to the spelling I can only take as an American term used for their hourly rate. I would assume Amenity Cost would be the overheads, insurance, fuel, maintenance, etc.

A lot of companies issue generic tender documents that they probably don't fully understand themselves. Never be afraid to tell the client that you work differently and will submit your tender based on your professional opinion on how the site should be managed. This has never been a issue for us on a multitude of varying tenders. Alternatively raise an RFI (request for information). With your client to clarify. My golden rule is that there is never a stupid question unless you ask it twice!

I read this post a few days ago and it lead me into a Google search that turned up all sorts of strange and weird grounds maintenance contracts, none of which I would ever sign.

Some of the parish council contracts had terms that I doubt are even considered legally acceptable and one major multimillion pound contract was awarded with the comment that three firms had quoted, but only the firm that was being awarded the contract actually understood the tender documents.

It was an illuminating experience reading some of these contracts and tender submissions that left me thinking that I am right in thinking it is best to walk away from some jobs.
