Hello, LJN. I would appreciate some advice on a small but potentially risky job.
Summary:
Previous and well-liked client has moved into a new house.
New property has a nice sandstone patio, with integral cast-concrete seating area.
Client would like their Lithic Fire Pit placed in this area, next to the seating. On the paving
How would I go about doing this, while protecting the existing paving from the heat?
There isn't actually anywhere else in the garden where it would a: fit, and b: be used, to be fair.
They already have the Fire pit - we installed it at their old property. We then transported it to their new one. They bought it originally because it looks like a permanent feature,
but is actually easily transportable. They are quite wedded to it, so lets solve this challenge!
The fire is contained within two steel rings, which is then 'clad' in the style of dry stone walling. Usually, we erect these on mot type 1 or sand. The inner ring is then 1/3 filled with sand, which a fire can be laid upon.
Will a deep (200mm?) layer of sand do it? the inner steel ring will get hot too.
The only solution I have thought of is to get another couple of layers of the cladding, lay these, fill with sand, then place the rest of it on this layer. That way, everything that'll heat up is off the patio.
Any other suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

What about a layer of fire bricks directly underneath?
