Electronic Diary or Paper Diary?

Looking for some opinions!

Currently using the old fashioned paper diary, regular sites/clients booked in throughout the year then extra jobs. Depending on weather, changing dates and clients, as hard as i try the diary becomes messy! Does it complicate things having it electronically? i like having a diary and flicking through to see the next bit of space etc. Is there a better way? what do you guys do and how does it work?

  • I just use google calendar. It syncs with my phone, pc and tablet. My calendar is shared with my other half so she can see what I'm doing and add family stuff to it that I need to attend etc. Keeps life easy really, if I need to change an appointment I just drag it to a different day, regular jobs can be set up to repeat too.

  • back of a fag packet here, absolute chaos with prevailing weather conditions and general seasonality etc, one off or occasional jobs having to be integrated with regular clients, keeping everyone happy, and organising a day's work as it goes along, it's what works best for me, all plans invariably go out the window, absolutely hammering it down again now here so the best laid plans for what's happening tomorrow are bound to go t*ts up, its like a puzzle where all the jobs are constantly being shifted around depending on proximity to each other, weather conditions, time available and urgency

      Sounds like me:-)
I have a rough idea what I'm doing each week/day but normally make it up as I go along on any given day
      • its the best way richard, as you well know its a juggling act i actually revel in the randomness, oh lets go and do so and so's now, might get away with it before that black cloud turns into something nasty, whereas other days play out with a text book planned schedule

  • I have a Sunbird calendar on my PC, it's the first thing I see when I turn it on in the morning. It is invaluable to keep track of personal and work stuff including staff holidays.  Important sports dates get added well in advance as well - we were able to organize ourselves so we could watch England's game on Thursday!!

I fill in a retrospective book diary at the end of each day to keep track of work completed and both vans have similar that the lads fill in daily, which I compare at the end of each month when invoicing comes around.

That's not o say I don't have random bits of paper floating about, with numbers, names and measurements scribbled that I often leave me scratching my head!

We use Jobber for our teams and then the data gets backed up each day.

  • I use paper as easier and don't need to worry about internet connection or low batteries but know I should use electronic as lone worker so should share meetings, times and locations with my partner/ buddy!

  • I've given various digital things a go and decided that a paper diary is perfect for me as a one-man business. I use a pencil, and write in small lettering and quite lightly, so it's easy to erase and rewrite things.

I've done the same Dan. I think it's easy to overthink and complicate things when it is just a one person operation.

  • I use the google calendar and put all my regular work in it. I print an A4 version off for the month and the month after. Set all the font to the smallest so each day has space to write. When things change about i cross off people and write them into the next available space, and any one off random jobs/dates i write in manually. The electronic ones are good because you set up a never ending series of dates that you can specify. I'd be more then happy to help you get it set up! I've also got a pocket diary with me for when the phone rings, that i look at too, damn, all this makes me sounds so much more organized then i actually am haha.
