Cordless and the rain

I'm getting drawn towards going down the battery route. Spoke to my Stihl dealer and asked how they fair if the get soaking wet in the rain.  He gave me an answer, but experience tells me that he didn't really know and was just waffling.

Anyone had any experience of water caused problems with battery tools?

As a side note to this have you looked at stihls website recently billybop?
They have a recall on some of the cordless gear!
      • yes the first cordless hedgetrimmers that they brought out, hsa65 and hsa85, doesn't affect me as I bought the better model hsa86 from the get go, wish I had one of the models affected though, as they will swap it free of charge for a brand spanking new better one lol

  • I ruined a pellenc long reach hedge cutter in the rain. Luckily it belonged to the client & they had insisted I keep cutting.
  • I try not to use any of my tools in the rain when it chucks.

Its also a Health and Safety issue, Slipping etc.

Spoke to another Stihl dealer who really didn't seem to know either.  When asked if the cordless tools can cope with getting wet, his words to me were, "I see, so if you drop it in a puddle you want to be able to pick it up and use it straight away"

"Not really", said I, "I'm referring to it being in the back of our open back pickup and it getting rained on"

"Oh, I haven't heard of any problems" was his less than reassuring reply.

Think I'll just wait until Saltex and ask on the Stihl stand.

    • At the start of the year when I went to a local show, the stihl guys there didn't have much info on it
  • Can't speak for Stihl gear but Makita LXT battery gear seems impervious. I even go so far as to hose them down if they're covered in mud, and then stick them above the log burner to dry out.

my local sthil dealers dont seem to know anything about battery at all -- one wonders if its because of their general petrol maintance /repair business they really dont want battery available

but then tbh they dont seem to understand the issue with low vibration either

nice guys though - just not really up to speed on current tech issues

    • my nearest Stihl dealer is a branch of Countrywide Farmers who seem pretty committed to the cordless, not that i buy all of mine from there by any means lol, i think one of the guys in there said he had been sent on some kind of course about it, they were certainly very interested to hear how I got on with using it, yes there is the potential issue that these places that rely on servicing to make an income could gradually lose business as cordless takes hold...but they are not unbreakable believe you me
