I am afraid that there are no shortcuts when finding reliable and reputable contractors to work with or recommend to your clients. As a designer, I have found the need for several contractors with different specialisms in my area and it has taken several years to find them. It is your reputation that suffers as well with poor recommendations. Networking, seeing previous work and being able to interview previous customers are always useful and should be welcomed by good contractors. But these contacts are probably as good a way to start as any.
