Apple storage rack

I'm looking for a nice apply storage rack for my father-in-law's 70th. I've seen some in Harrod Horticultural and a few other places - for a tall one, they are ranging about £250. I just wondered if anyone had somed ideas where I could get one cheaper?

  • Fereday + saw + timber......

Seriously, I've often toyed with making one of these, it looks like dead simple carpentry, and should be much cheaper than buying ready made.
  • Have you read my blog about Fereday building the planter????? I'd need Nick Knowles and the St John's ambulance on standby, a blindfold (for me), enough timber to make 5 apple racks (just to get one), and a divorce lawyer! Blessed with many skills though he is, wood work is not really one of them.

    Hi, Cat

Try www.selections.com. I haven't ordered from them, but they have a couple of nice-looking storage racks that might appeal and they're certainly cheaper than the one you've found.

    Phil,

Once we get out passports sorted, we may hold you to that.... in the meantime, Hazel's suggested website looks to have just the solution we need... have I told you how great this site is recently????!!!!
  • apples ,in a rack!!!!!! i think not.......unless that rack is in a cold dark place, with marble/stone shelves to keep those apples nice and fresh (you have to slow their metabolism down)...9 years on a fruit farm.
  • make one out of pieces of wood???????????????????? £250 ???????? nice wood cut to size from timber yard? wood and screws= £30 ................
  • Okay, you're now my fruitfarm guru Mr L.... my father-in-law is an crazy for apples and apple trees... what is the perfect gift... other than another apple tree or a cookbook?

  • larders were designed as cool dark places to store and keep foods fresh, hence the marble shelves, which always seem to stay cool/cold.the racks i have seen look good, well built but very over priced, you could get pine shelves from b+q for £25 and would do the same job. if reck is in the kitchen they wont stay fresh very long,a garage would be much better, would keep twice as fresh.best place....old air-raid shelter on marble shelves or a co2 controlled storage facility lol,as for a present, not trees or books........try calling blackmoor estate orchards to see if they would give a tour of their 300 acres of orchards and packing and storage facilities, plus a trip across the road to the nursery. gu336bs
