Advice on Red Robin

I took these leaves from some of the plants. Not all have this problem and it is mainly on one side.  I think it is the wind that has done it because it is on the East side of the hedge.

I thought that next winter putting up a windbreak on the easterly side.

I would also like some advice on feeding them. I am not sure if any compost was used when they were planted about a year and a half ago.

Hi there, I would of thought the issue is more to do with poor drainage and lack of sunlight? You can enhance the soil but you need to really remove all damaged leaves, and all from around the base of the hedge. A few years ago I took on a property with the same issues, hedge was newly planted but unfortunately not by me, i dug them all up, removed damaged leaves, improved the drainage and got a tree surgeon in to remove some low hanging branches on the surrounding trees and within a season they were already looking 100% better. I will add the biggest reason this hedge was so bad was poor drainage. Many thanks Harry

  • There are signs of fungal spots on those leaves. Often happens in the wet weather.

Remove all of the fallen leaves and keep the ground clean below the plants.

Helps prevent the spread of the spores.
