I've had iPad and iPhone - both I found difficult for effective use in he field. I was recommended to get an HP slate 7, as it is solid and has the bitterlich app's etc. I can't recommend highly enough now - it has survived drops and getting wet and the keypad is much easier to use with muddy hands.

We use iPads with SIM cards and iPhones in the vans and pc's in the office.
Apple is expensive but is ultra reliable and the batteries on the iPads last for weeks on end it seems!
nexus 7
or if bigger look as nexus 10
I've heard a lot of people talking about iPads with sims , i personal turn my iPhone into a 'hot spot'and use it that way to get on line for the amount of time my iPad is on line i find it very cost affective .
It is an option Shane, but quite a few Sim providers prohibit 'tethering' or at least limit it (certainly where there is a 'unlimited data allowance'). For instance, O2 prohbit tethering on my iPhone contract.
So for limited use it is a good method and allows you to select a cheaper tablet model.

We have one ipad with a sim and one without so I speak with first hand knowledge.
One the best current iPad/Tablet Sim deals around is from Three.co.uk
- monthly rolling contract (ie it's part way between a full contract and PAYG) for £7.50pm for 1Gb.
Bonus is Three's network seems more suited for data (...well certainly over O2, as we can compare them back to back)
