wage for spraying

Hi all can anyone help ?
I have a employee who has just about passed his spray ticket
I was wondering what sort of increase would be apt for this
at the moment he is on minimum wage
I have paid the £500 course fee

Thanks for any input

David

Just about passed ?.Have a look on the job web sites and see what the going wage is for your geographical area and make a decision based on that. Way too many differing opinions from members on here, we are all over the Uk.Better getting the info from local job adverts.

Personally when I passed mine when working for my employer I had no pay increase,
And didn't aspect one !! Was just happy to have passed and have it under my belt
To me its part of the learning role of the job plus you've paid !! If he had payed
Him self then you could increase is pay according to how much he's actually spraying
And if he's doing it efficiently..
  • You can't keep giving employees a payrise every-time they acquire a new skill.... you'll be bankrupted.

True Geoff but he is paying minimum wage so there should be room for a rise. The employee will be carrying out a skilled, certified and important job.

No pay rise yet let's see how good of a job he does middle of the year??
That Mickey Mouse coarse is a total joke !! 2 days omg what a rip off
Should be at least a weeks coarse knowing how much shite you can do to
The environment... To me its part of the role, would you give a rise
If they've just passed ncpt pedestrian mower!!! ???
  • If you pay for the training as an on-going part of the job, I'd expect him to appreciate it and accept a lower wage to learn the trade and become qualified.

Talk to him, explain it, and work with him to keep his skills constantly improving. He should know he's working towards becoming a more valued employee, perhaps even partner one day, or he's setting himself up to build his own business in the future.

Is that in response to me Mark ?, if yes, then for a mower NPTC course no I wouldn't, but you don't need a ticket to mow, you do to spray, and minimum wage is for unskilled staff, when he passes he will be licenced to spray legally and with that comes more responsibility. Got to be worth a bit of a rise imho. I would even suggest that he could be tempted to leave and go elsewhere with his ticket and get above minimum wage. Most higher hourly rate jobs advertised ask for PA1/PA6 ticket as a must have in this game. In my book it's most definately a wage changer, paid for by the boss or not.

Paying for and putting staff through a short NPTC course doesn't amount to an apprenticship Paul, thats sending them off to college for 3 years. Why should the employee appreciate it and willingly get paid the bare minimum, thats insulting to a member of staff that the employer obviously appreciates enough to put him on the PA course in the first place. Minimum wage is an insult as it is, never mind being paid it when your employer needs you to have the cert so he can make more money off your back.

How old is your employee David ?
