I pay up to a grand for AVIVA for my little van. Its all bells and whistles and I thought I need it.

first they said I had no no claims record for a van hence the price. My 10 plus years on my car do not count.

Once I had my first year under the belt the rates went up because of the area? But I had no accident at all. Nada issues.

Then they said it was because I have my son on it because of his age 25 years old, but he drives the same type of van from his employer since many years (gasman), so has more experience than me and has had no accidents in his car either.

My problem is I cannot use the comparisons websites because the previous owner of my van changed the registration and the websites cannot recognise it and think its a car. So no quotes for me. Plus its automatic and the engine "special" as it cannot be found on the comparisons sites either. When calling insurers direct they faff about and cannot find it either. It clearly exists as I pay my road tax and got it registered in my name without problems.

It irks me when I hear people who are driving larger vans than me pay only £300 to £500 including indemnity and tools cover.

Anyone can recommend a van insurance broker as I am tired paying around £90 per month?

  • I recently returned from Australia with protected no claims, rating 1 for life. It meant nothing to any insurer, I did manage to get that quoted in years and Aviva accepted the NCD from Coles Insurance Australia. My Fiat Doblo cost me £233 fully comp per year. There are not to many insurers who do this, Adrian flux insurance brokers told me that there are a few other companies who offer it to overseas NCD.
Give them a try for your situation and see what they can do.
  • I just wanted to give you guys feedback as to what happened today.

First I hit the internet and went to all the sites you guys mentioned, then did the Money Saving Expert trip as well. But as before most sites had issue with my registration number. Or they had issue with me not finding the correct vehicle model etc.

In total frustration I called VW and once I told them the vehicle number they were able to tell me exactly what vehicle I have. That made life a lot easier when hitting the comparison sites again.

But they all gave me the same quote. One guy wanted me to change over for a £10 pounds difference!?! He told me also that legal cover is the same as cover from being hit by uninsured drivers. Ahem... nope.

I spoke to a number more but it all went south.

So I thought lets see if I can find a small human brokerage that's reasonably close to me. I found one and her quote was just over £650 including Tool cover up to £2.5K. She is also going to check out my home and contents insurance  (it seems I have been paying too much there too) and next year she will sort out my professional liability insurance as well. The brokerage is called A-Plan (www.aplan.co.uk).

    So happy days I hope.

    • I'm £542 for my 02 plate transit lwb hi top with £500 tool cover from direct line

When I was shopping for a van it seemed to be the bigger the van the cheaper the insurance! A connect was going to be £1200!!! Used my ncb without any hassle aswell

When I transferred from my ford Ranger to my new Renault kangoo my insurance premium went up by £5 a year, I was annoyed at this, however I was putting £65 diesel per week in my pickup, my new Eco van costs me £14 diesel per week, that's a saving of £50 per week, outweighs any extra on a yearly premium by owning a small van, mind you it's perfect for me, much bigger than its older brother but to small for most companies...
  • I am with Toyota/Lexus insurance [it doesn't have to be a toyota or lexus vehicle] with my 2014 Hilux Invincible. Fully comp/Legal cover/Key cover/No Claims cover £360. I have been with them for about four or five years and the premiums have remained the same, even though I have a brand new Hilux every two years. NFU wanted £680 five years ago for the same cover. You deal with them direct so talk to a human being rather than filling in endless forms online.

  • I have a transit t260 Swb and I have only been driving 1 and half years I pay with every extra cover £650 a year I think it's about £50 per month with Aviva can't see why you would be paying more than I would....
