So, time has come to renew my van insurance. After trying numerous places, i found Compare the Market was Cheapest. Admiral were the cheapest on the site, had all the correct cover i needed so i saved the quote. For comparison sake the quote was £930.00. Phoned up the number given to me from Compare The Market, which was admirals number. The lady on the phone checked all the details and told me the price is £960.00. This was due to the fact i was taking the policy out over the phone and it calculates the prices as of that exact moment and not when the quote i saved was. So i hang up and insturcted and go to buy the policy through the website. BANG, once clicking continue, the price is now £1215.00. Confused as hell i spend 20 minutes on hold, so I'm told that the price of £1215.00 is generated at this exact moment.
Stating my point of i have been given a quote for £930.00 and i have the reference number, unless you take out a policy at the exact moment you get the quote, it is utterly useless. After a heated telephone conversation, they would not back down and the price they would give me was £960.00! what a crock!
I cannot understand the point of phoning/trolling the internet to get the cheapest quote, as if you go back to it later the price would be different, so "shopping around" as everyone is told to do is a minefield. The reason i use comparison sites is for me (21 licence 4 years 3 yrs no claims) its a lot cheaper compared with other insurers! One of the reasons i chose admiral as it had all the correct cover i wanted etc!

I only put that I'm 21 etc as with my details trying to get quotes compare the market were cheapest
I have to confess that I'm lazy and stick with NFU and if price has gone up wildly a phone call can usually bring it down again I have found. I like them as you can speak to someone who knows what they are talking about on the phone. Or go to a local office if you really want to. Price is not the bottom line for me with insurance anymore, but I'm nearly 40 with full no claims on home car and 5 years in business insurance
What did make me laugh was this, used Compare the Market for insurance, The cheapest company was Admiral. When it was actually sorted out, it wasn't admiral that was offering the insurance, admiral acted as a broker and the insurance was in fact from a company called Gladiator, talk about confusing the situation!
Find a good insurer. Build a good relationship with them over many years, and they are going to bend over backwards to help in the event of a claim.
Every year, find the cheapest quote online and ask them to match it. They will usually get very close for equal cover, so everyone wins.
We speak to the same people in the office year after year and they will usually beat or match the comparison sites with the addition of having excellent customer service.
+1 for APlan. When ever I've referred to 'our broker' - it's APlan I'm talking about. Excellent all round service...and remember you may see certain insurances cheaper. Perhaps time to wonder why.....especially when you come to cliam.
I've used Comparethemarket for all my vehicle insurances..... van, car and 3 motorbikes..........and I've got 5 Meerkat toys to show for it! I've always found them excellent but as Gary says, watch out for the cheap quotes. I always look up the reviews for the ones I'm thinking of using and it gives you a pretty good idea of what they're like when it comes to putting in a claim or dealing with their customer service.
+2 for A-Plan - used for my commercial vehicles when self employed - now use them for my 'civvy' car. Speaking to a human is always better.....
