Power barrow or wheel barrow ?

Phil's recent blog set me thinking about shifting topsoil ....I've got a job in a couple of weeks which includes shifting 20 tonnes of topsoil from the roadside to the clients back garden, through a "standard" width gate (90cms ?).

How would you guys do it - slog it out with hand barrows, or hire a power barrow? And whats the going rate for hiring a barrow, and how long is it likely to take (roadside to back garden is maybe 30 yds)??

  • travis perkins do one for £53 a day or £88 for the week,it will carry 380kg and is just 28" wide (700mm),so check out your local hire shops
  • Power barrow would take a bit of the work out of the job for sure. I pay about 80.00 per week for hire. I would say about a day's work.

Just out of interest, is there a road that borders any part of the garden that you could get a grab bucket over? If so, just get the soil delivered that way.

I was looking at a Kanga Kid with a front loading bucket at a hire shop recently, maybe this would be a solution - however, I'm not sure of the machine width?? - http://www.kangaloader.co.uk/2-series-kanga-loader.asp - I'm thinking of hiring one next week with an auger for post holes.
  • series 2 kanga kid has a working width of about 800mm, we hire one for the installation of rugby posts and tree planting from travis perkins hire, around £90 per day,inc auger, so do haggle with hire shop, some of this gear does not get out much,so you can grab a bargain. it should cost £135 for the unit/day plus attachment/s.
    im with bird,can you get a grab/lift n shift near the garden....or a couple of teenagers for £40 a day..perhaps not!!!
  • Hi,
My name is ofer, nice to meet you, I had to take about the same 10 tonns this summer. back in the passed I had workers to do it but not this summer.
but I actually found that its not too bad with a good wheel barrows . half the work is to load your soil so it means to hire 2 tools. to take 20 tons is not more than 4-8 hours job. I could split it for 2 days and did some others jobs in that garden.
when I checked prices to hire tools best prices were with local contractors that sometimes dont use their tools. I cant really remember the prices, sorry.I remember that I was told the price per day or 2 days is no much different. but you need it for few hours.
do you want me to help you - where are you based?
find someone to help you with a barrow -that what I will do next time.

feel free to contact me with anything else.
  • Steve (in reply to your first reply...) - is that the JCB dumpster in the TP catalogue listed at £129 per day ? Even by my standards, getting that down to £53 per day would be a heck of a discount.

Bird - if only there were a road nearby - the garden backs onto open countryside, and I know from experience that heavy trucks and grasssy fields don't mix. If there were an alternative to barrows, I'd be there !

The Kanga is an interesting idea tho - the bucket doesn't look very big, so lots of loads for 20 tonnes i'm guessing, but it would eliminate all the shovelling.....Hmmm
  • no not a jcb,its a mtd3000hd, 380kg payload. if you go to travis perkins website, then trade and scroll till you get to the hire section, they call it the toolmart ...and it is £53/day.
open country, what about tractor and trailer(local farmer)?
    kanga max lift is 100kg
  • The price I've had quoted for the Kanga is £75.00 for 2 days, so I'm going to try it out - it's got to beat hand-digging 40 post holes (plus it's always fun to try a new toy!)

If the Kanga has a max lift of 100Kg it's a possible option as you'll eliminate most of the shovelling and it carries a tad more than a barrow. Having said that, a power barrow would still be my favoured means.
  • thats a great price for the kanga, make sure that includes attachments though. just a tip when using for post holes, you just cant drop and drill, you have to ease forward as you get deeper and adjust head angle(all done by the controls) to keep auger head in a vertical plane, also, to clear hole, keep it spinning as you lift, this will trow the spoil around the edge as you lift. another bonus, if it does get stuck, you can reverse the auger out.........great tool. and it fits in the back of a transit.
  • If you have 2 other lads it easier with 3 wheel barrows. and can be done in around 6 hours. I did move 20 ton of mot about 120 metres in 3 and half hours earlier this year by wheel barrow but it was loaded by small digger we had on site thankfully as we did ask for 4 wheeler as we knew an 8 wheeler wouldnt get on to site.
  • I use the augers a lot, just make sure theres no soil, gas, electric or water pipes... Ive never had a problem, but the first time we lent our machine out to another landscaper he put it straight through a water main!.
