Had one of the Vans go into "limp mode", shortly followed by the Engine Stop light coming on early this morning on the A31.
They managed to get to a layby safely. A few panic calls later resulted in the Recovery Flat-bed coming out to collect them as the van couldn't be driven and had a 'horrible smell'.
I went out to swap out my truck for their van so I could wait for the recovery and they could continue.
Once back to the safety of the garage, it was diagnosed as a 'melted, self destructed Alternator'. So hopefully not too expensive.
In reality not a major problem, but it was what we heard on the Radio an hour later that made us gulp.
Almost exactly where the layby was on the A31 had seen a major accident between some cars and lorry with debris everywhere.
It resulted in a death and the total closure while the Air Ambulance landed. In fact road was still closed @ 5pm due to investigations.
To think we where standing on the grass behind the layby 1/2 an hour earlier and could have been hit.....made us shudder :-(
Feel so sorry for the car driver & family; on his way to work and never got there. Sad. So sad.
Life is short. Too Short at times

Gives you a funny feeling, doesn't it Gary? I had one of those 'by the grace of God' moments exactly 13 years ago and again on every 9/11 anniversary. We had been sitting in the Windows on The World restaurant at the top of the North Tower 11th July 2001. Two months to the day before the tragic event and often think about the cheery staff that served us.
In 1987 I was away with the Scouts at an activity centre and we were meant to be going to remembrance day at Enniskillen, only the minibus wouldn't start...
That was the day the IRA planted a huge bomb that killed eleven people (ten civilians and a police officer) were killed and 63 were injured.

Just in...so it's still closed. Must be a major investigation.

too many close calls to mention when I was in the police. Life is too short, my illness has reinforced that. Don't be a slave to work and put off doing things with the family or for yourself, just to please or squeeze in extra customers for a few extra quid in the pocket. Its no good lining the coffin with it.
Had a close call a few years back when turfing a row of new build houses. I car came off the road and wiped out the garden we were in only 3 hours before. Luckily the driver was ok and no one was in the garden but it turns your stomach.
I witnessed a fatal motorway crash a couple of years ago. It's so important to get out of the vehicle and behind the barrier, even if it's raining....
