£250 for a new gearhead? Get a used one, or a used kombi hedge trimmer and take the head off (two bolts) and put it back on your one. I don't know how yours broke but they're pretty solid as long as you grease them.
New head means new blades. You never get the same edge no matter how you sharpen a used set.
I hate to disagree with Seth, but I'd go for new myself. They do last forever, so buying new and looking after them makes a lot of sense.
Grease the head every few uses, and sharpen the blades really regularly.
Yea, new machine as i read a few things saying the gears go on the stihl alot but by the sounds of Seth and Paul not so(thanks guys).
Bevel gears do 'go' on Stihl articulating long reach hedge cutters - either as dedicated units or Kombi items - at least that is our experience (we've got a few 'old sets' in the unit that get stripped for their parts).
Agree, ensure you get the right gearbox grease and it's checked/topped up - this will extend the life.
I believe you can just buy the 'heads' on their own ?
Cheers Gary, by head do you mean just the gears head or the the whole attachment with blades i.e http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311376581988?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649... ?
I'm sure you can just buy the head (without shaft) as a 'spares' item and that it is the same part for dedicated unit or Kombi (needs to be confirmed by a good dealer - I don't curently have access to Stihl parts catalog).
Later versions are fully articulating. Earlier one were "limited".
You can.

However I can't find it on the Stihl website itself.
