Landscape Subcontracting for House Builders

I have been working in the commercial soft landscaping sector for the last ten years now, starting as a labourer and gradually working my way up through the ranks. Now I attend most on/off site meetings and get involved with tenders and suppliers. My director has taken a step back and only works 2 days a week leaving me to it.I would like to start my own commercial landscaping company, however I come a little unstuck when it comes to looking at the figures. In the tender process, contractors are looking to work with subcontractors that match an already defined criteria such as having a large and sustainable t/o, a sound 3 year trading history, professional accreditations etc.I think I may look at 'piggy backing' off of an established landscaping/tree surgery company and helping them to win tenders. I could then do a profit share or such like.Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

  • i'm in exactly the same position as you mate so i'll be following this thread with interest.

could you not just register your business etc and start trading in landscaping as a whole, doing whatever landscape work you are capable of then when it comes to tendering time maybe a year down the line as such you have a decent portfolio to present to any potential client?

thats the route i'm going down whilst still in full time employment, at least you would be able to get a closer look at the tendering process for your current company if you are taking on more responsibility? could you even become a certified contractor for your current company?

    • That's exactly what I'm discussing with my boss at the moment. I'm also looking into getting in with some of the smaller house builders, that require you to have a smaller turnover. I'm also considering filling in tenders on my bosses behalf and paying them a % any projects value that I win.

I would be very happy for you to come in with tenders with us and split profits and/or share work. Where are you based? Check out www.final-5.co.uk -we specialise in soft landscaping.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    • Thank you Nick, that sounds interesting. I live in Hertfordshire and at current most of my work is in London.
I only do soft landscaping as hard landscaping is done by ground workers on 99% of sites I go to.

Do you have a private email address that I could reach you on?
