  • Landscape fabric is not good from my thought because :-
    1. Because it sucks the life out of your soil.
    2. It kills the earthworms.
    3. The compost disappears surprisingly fast.
    4. Plant roots grow on top of the landscape fabric, which isn’t doing them any favors.
    5. The fabric is butt-ugly, and you will know this because it is so slick that a stiff wind will blow the mulch off of it.
    6. If you get behind on your weeding, it’s a nightmare to get the weeds out.

  • used plantex tdp 50 for years and never had a problem with it. much better than the tissue paper stuff does what it says on the.....er wrapper thingy

  • The fibrous type of fabric isn't good in my opinion, as others have said weeds grow well on it and it doesn't stop tougher weeds from penetrating through the fabric.

  • From my experience there's 2 types.
The pressed fibre stuff is for temporary applications - good for on pots/containers to stop grit/soil mixing too. Sun and rain exposure makes it rot fairly quickly. I think bulbs can grow through it ok as well

The woven plastic is what you want for permanent stuff.
If it's a wide area (not just long) then get the widest roll you can (range from 1 to 2 metres usually) otherwise you'll waste loads in the overlap.

  • the Plantex is the woven geotextile stuff (apologies not the tdp50 got the name wrong). ive gone back to jobs years later where its still doing a good job with nothing getting through it. They give a good guarantee on it as well. Its made by DuPont and has a life span of 25 years. It can be got in a range of sizes up to 4m wide. Cant stand the cheap tissue paper stuff. .

funnily enough I went to see a large a garden yesterday which was done about 8 years ago. it has been completely gravelled over and the fabric was put down poorly but is breaking up and disintegrating (the typical diy type stuff) they want a quote to shift all the various types of gravel, put new fabric down and put the shingle back. about 15 tonnes of the stuff!

  • Nice one Thermo :-> Priced up correctly.

''We 'did' this three years ago and I can't believe the weeds growing through it''. That's a regular comment when I visit a new garden these days.

The DIY shops sell some ropey materials when it comes to weed management and clients buy into it until they know better. A combination of approaches (using decent fabric & W/K) will achieve the end result - a feed free area to be enjoyed.

    Gotta educate :->

    Cheers, Eugene

  • under decking, for gravel, driveways, bark ? etc

all are different weights and fabrics.
