Chances are it's iron being spread as a winter turf hardener.
We've started using a weak-ish Glypho 360 that is rain fast within the 'hour'
It's a bit of a moot question when you speak to people. We've had a few people spraying sulphate of iron to remove the first moss in lawns. Some people are starting weed control, others are still unsure as to whether to go or not. I think the balance though is towards thinking there will be a cold snap at some time so they are holding off....it also depends where you are in the country too....sorry not a definitive answer and probably no help but this is what we are hearing.
While here, 'down sarf', it's been very (very) wet it's also been mild, and yes, I've seen weed growth all over the territory.
The nicest thing about pulling weeds though is - this time of year. Their roots are flexible and tease out really well with some care, simply because the minimal soil that surrounds them (think paving or loose shingle over membrane here) is saturated and while the roots are keen to grow they're also susceptible. What blights me in summer one year - bindweed, ground elder, etc, etc - is noted and given 'The Hulk' treatment now. A thorough digging over, hand pick the root stems and carry on weeding.
The Glyphosate is ready to go, but not just yet.
Cheers, Eugene
Judging by the way my badly block-paved drive is shooting up with healthy weeds all over, it's certainly time to start dealing with it now. Another warm week and they'll be seeding....
I took out a holly tree this week, as the blackbirds were starting to fly in and out to last year's nest. It might only be January, but I think there would have been eggs in it soon, and I couldn't leave it another year. It's getting difficult to plan anything these days.
been using roundup through most of winter, just takes a litter longer to work
