Getting Pricing Right

Hi All,

I would be interested in fellow members thoughts of pricing this job, see photos.  It would be great to see how close or far out I was on pricing. I wont say at this time how much I charged, but I will say my pricing skills could be better. took me 2.5 days singlehandedly with a shadow!

forget about anything else other than labour... :-/

Thanks in advance for your input.

  • £160  a day-  so  £320 + £80 =  £400 labour..    2man job digging that off and shovelling gravel :   bet your back is knackered...    not good.  £250 materials delivered with organising and vat.   plus skip  £100   is £750 total  (plus  edge/bricks , i cant see)?     should be approx  £900

I'm confused was the low wall already up or did you build it?
I can't tell what was there regarding the wall from the pictures.
I quoted for one about half that size last year at just under £500 I think. They thought it was too much so I didn't do it and it still hasn't been done!
  • going off the top right picture you didn't build the wall so skip+labour+materials id say about £600 and 2 days work

If you were stoning it, why bother to take the turf off?

  • at least £400 for the labour alone

  • Hii,  thanks for all your inputs.

Richard - The walls were already there. that tells you - you were probably on the mark with your price, no-one else has took it? or possibly they didn't have that amount of money.

Rory - I took 2.5 days, lifted the turf,  dug over and weeded round the perimeter of the wall, cut back then dug out 3 bushes. levelled the area then pinned down the fabric, slashed the bulk bags of chips as the guy craned them over into place. raked the chips out. then put the decorative edgings in. the folk wanted to do the planting themselves in their own time.

Robbie - The customer wanted the turf lifted, they had their own ideas, I could go and rant on but I wont, jobs done end-of. ill put it down to experience. If I take on another similar job there will be conditions in future.

I would certainly look to charge more in future (more than £330 anyway!). It would be good to have someone that could go and price jobs and take a commission. I am not best skilled in this area. I learn from jobs, but it can be soul-destroying realising I should have charged more.

Thanks again, if anyone has any good advice towards pricing. Id be happy to receive it.

    Cheers

    Scott

      Price higher:)
But on a serious note if you win everything you price you are too cheap.
I'm happy if I get about 70% of what I price. It's a hard one because only you know your costs and what you need/ want to pay yourself.
I had another one I priced 2 1/2 years ago really small quoted £200 he asked me to quote again a year later I quoted £225 he said why is it more now!
I've not looked but I bet that's still not been done either.
Keep going you will learn in the end. I made some huge mistakes in the early days and I still do now once in a while.
    • We price a lot of landscaping jobs by the m2 patios, decking, lawn. Etc
Maintenance type stuff would have to be worked out on man hours and wear and tear etc
      Do you do much landscaping

2.5 days seems like a very long time. Hiring a turf cutter you would lift that amount of turf in an hour or two. By hand it would take forever and you would be knackered. Skip on site to dispose of turfs. A few shrubs dug out, borders weeded, membrane laid and bulk bags of aggregate craned in and levelled. If you had all your materials and equipment organised beforehand you could have had that done in a long day I reckon. Then the £330 doesn't sound quite so bad?

James is right, using a turf cutter would get it done in a long day, plus no broken back to follow, not sure if its the fact I'm getting older but I would not even entertain the idea of digging a lawn up by hand being a decent size, the client won't appreciate the fact your back is screwed because you did it all by hand to save them the cost of hire a machine, plus for sure it would work out cheaper in the end for saving time on the job...
