  • You could try a fleet policy but some want 3 vehicles. You can get quite good discounts as supposed to separate!

From experience, you don't see much savings until you have 5/6 vehicles. The benefits are the driver flexibility etc. In your case (with just one driver ?) I would look at indivdual policies as you can get 'intro' bonuses etc to offset extra policies.

Again, it's an area best served by talking to a good broker who can give advice and work out what's best for you......

    • Second what Gary has stated.  Mini fleet policies can be for as low as two vehicles but some don't have too many restrictions on age or named drivers etc.

Speak to two different brokers and ask them to compare fleet against two separate policies you may find that for example LV are doing a special introduction rate for mini fleet which may work out cheaper or they may know of a company that insures 2 vehicles cheaper where one is deemed to be off road for part of the week etc,,

  • have to say i disagree. we run two vans and a tipper. I was running each on a separate insurance and only i could drive all three and a named driver on each one. Went to aviva. got all three vehicles on, all three drivers on all vehicles, protected ncb and better cover and lower excess. worked out £700 cheaper a year. This year on renewal, even after a small accident it was cheaper and even cheaper after i called up and said i could find it cheaper elsewhere. I insure all 3 of them for under £800 a year.

Also speak to rac about fleet breakdown cover. once you get three vehicles its a lot cheaper. costs me under £200 a year for all three for recovery, home and roadside

Re: Breakdown, we used to be with Tesco (!) which was underwritten by RAC. Tesco then dipped out of the market and passed our policies directly to RAC.

Last renewal RAC massively increased costs (not sure if this was a ploy after year 1?). We went back to our broker and they offered breakdown policies with homestart, recovery, onward travel / over nighters for staff, recovery to ANY location (unlike most policies which take you to their nearest 'recommended' garage - which is not useful when working over a wide geo-area) & full euro breakdown ! .... all for £50 per vehicle.

Like so much in business, it is dependant on your circumstances, age of vehicles and location(s)

The moral ? Go hunt out the good deals, quite often held by brokers.

      There are out there...

  • a point worth highlighting.

If using a mini fleet and the insurance is under your company name, make sure that the vehicles are also registered under the company. I guess the same rules applies to single policies?

A few years back I had 6 vans and my daughters car on the mini fleet policy with NU.  She had a run in with a Country Wide van and lets just say the insurance company wasn't too impressed that her car wasn't registered under the company!!!

Also, when I done a price comparison insurance check, when I entered my personal details as the owner the quote was cheaper (same insurance company) than when I stated the van was owed by the LTD company
