fireplace materials

I've been asked to build a fireplace in one of my gardens.
Having never done this I thought id seek a bit of advice.
The areas in direct contact with flames and high temperatures, do they need to be fire bricks or would clay bricks or concrete blocks be fine? Does the mortar have to be any different to normal? Can I still render the outside with a mortar or plaster render?
Any help would be appreciated before I cost it up.
Cheers.

  • Will need fire brick of some sort I would think. Make sure you get it right Chas, full homework required with this type of project. Concrete can explode when in contact with fire.

Fire bricks and refactory cement, then you can face with whatever brick/stone you like.

  • you need to be very very careful. a void in the mortar that has got damp can cause a build up of steam and bang. always worth considering a metal firebox to sit in the fireplace. much safer
