Drought Report 2012 by EA

LJN Call To Action:

How ironic, given the weather, that the Environment Agency has recently issued the attached Drought Report and forecasts for 2013.

It is a subject that touches all our working and personal lives. Last year the situation again affected our industry's ability to trade during Spring/Early Summer. We had work suspended, lost and our revenue suffered.

So, will it happen again ?  If so, are you going to plan for it ? What can we do to influence the future ?

Should we become a key player at the Industry's 'newly formed' initiative 'Waterwise' :

http://www.the-hta.org.uk/page.php?pageid=1035

currently dominated by all the private landscaping associations.

Note: The largest UK organisation (ie You, Us, LJN) are not currently involved or invited...... Should we be ?

Surely rather than just an e-learning initiative, we should be able to initiate 'direct' action on the future use of water in our industry.

The current 'players' were woken from their slumber and left severely embarrassed by the pro active stance taken by LJN and some of its members...

A repeat of last years 'head-in-sand' attitude by the "old boys" simply won't do.....

  • I find this rather odd that there is a drought potentiality for 2013.

Given the quantity of water present at this moment we are obviously letting this water flow away out of use. I would have thought reserves were restocking themselves quite well. The water companies must have a pretty bad ` process of restocking, storing, reusing, utilising`  available water.

This is one of the main reasons we have droughts in certain regions: Simply, profits have been taken by selling off reservoirs and little forward planning. We have been brain washed into thinking it is linked to all other manner of reasons other the most obvious: insufficient capacity to service a growing population:
