decent lawnmower

Hi,I'm battling through websites and various advice from here and other sites re the best mower to get! when i started 15years ago i swore by Rover mowers but did get through three in 5years!! Then bought a John deere R52s which lasted 3years before the drive died. Its always the drive that seems to fail in the end. So, what do others reccomend for a business that does mainly mowing and doesn't want to spend thousands!!!?

  • This question is always a hot subject for one reason or another ( see the other posts ) I think the 2 main ones that have come out of the discussion are Hayter or Honda, each has its advantages and disadvantages.

What model you need all depends on the size and length of the lawn.

One of those will most definatly last more than 3 years i still have a 10 year old hayter and the only thing that has neede replacing was the pull cord.

    Hope this helps
  • Hello.
I use a Hayter and swear by them. Mine used to be my Grandads...it's about 18 years old and still going strong. I find them reliable and hard wearing. Any other mowers I've used arn't as good in my opinion.
  • Do Etesia come with a roller model ?
  • thanks for all the response. Think i shall check out hayters and hondas again. Have seen an Alpina mower but very wary as i have no local dealers and the price seemed amazingly cheap!
Oil changes every month?? wow, you're a better man than me colin. Mine get changed twice a year if they're lucky!!Mind you, as i said before, its never the engine that dies, always the drive.
  • Just to add to this

The blades are also an importent factor i have 3 21" Lawnflight pros all with added mulching kit and i sharpen the blades at least once every 2 months.

It only costs a few quid but it is an importent factor to add on top of the sevicing that colin wrote.
  • I have yet to find one mower that meets all the requirements.

I use a number of different mowers based upon the lawn, weather conditions and client requirements.

I must admit due to the wet year we had the Etesia has been a god send. The trade off is no stripes but what a cut and great collection.

Been very disappointed with the Hayters over the last three years - And lucky if I get a whole year out of them before the drive goes. Hondas were great all rounders but the PRO model too heavy for run of the mill lawns.

Last year we introduced the John Deere R54RKB - heavy mower but brilliant drive - you will have to run to keep up with it.

As Martin and Colin have mentioned - Key is sharpe blades and also wash out the collection bag.
  • Hi Colin

Great mower in the wet and dry the stripes are large and really stand out

The blade brake clutch seem to keep going for years

When the weather is dry the mulch system saves me a small fortune in waste

The only probs i have with them are they r to heavy and there seems to be problems with the drive cable other than that i cant rate them enough.

I here what BGS says re the new hayters the parts are very high and the drive seems to be a big problem on them aswell.

If the etesia made a roller model then i would find it hard to beat.

ah i do my own blades as i was taught balancing / sharpening. and setting circular saw blades as a kid by a blacksmith i knew, there is a knack to it but a good one to learn
how do you get on with the lawnflite pro?
