As you know, I lost all my equipment, plus now 4 days dealing with it all, when my van was turned over.
I have a lovely lady I've worked for coming on 15 years now: she's in her late-80s, and I've seen her through her husband dying, and many other traumas. It makes no money: I cut the lawn every fortnight, but the cost of travelling there is more than the £20 I charge her. I make a bit more on the major hedge work etc., but still not worth the time if I'm honest.
I've always kept the work up, partly because I feel we should all do the odd job for the people who genuinely need it, and also because I've learned a lot from her incredible plant knowledge.
Today, my cheque for the usual £20 was folded in half, with the comment that "there's a bit extra towards your new mower". I was really choked up to get home and see it was for £250.....
I will bank it: she'd be offended if I didn't. I will sneak the costs down to refund it if I can, as I feel it's far too much. But, it's a great reminder that we work for real people, and sometimes that counts for more than constantly searching for the extra profits!

Great thread Paul - I guess we all have those special customers such as your lady. That's why I do what I do and love every day, putting a smile on people's faces is a great feeling.
Ah that is a nice reminder that there really are real people with lovely hearts out there. (Sorry to hear about your equipment getting stolen)

Lovely and reminds me of a few customers of mine - Sorry to hear on your tool loss and hope your up and running again asap.
I had a similar old lady I'd been doing for 17 years, when she died, she left me £500 in her will which was very touching also.
Acts like these do restore faith in human nature.
Great stories :-)
