Avant 755i Loader: A Transformative Tool

Richard Overton, the steward of a family business established in the 1900s, has praised the transformative power of the Avant 755i Loader in improving their operations.

With a deep-rooted history in agriculture, the Overton family has witnessed the evolution of their business from its humble beginnings, where Richard's grandfather toiled to expand their landholding, to the present day, marked by a diverse portfolio of activities ranging from potato cultivation to cold storage, a livery yard, landscaping, and more.

The turning point in their operations came with the decision to diversify, a strategic move that required a versatile and reliable piece of equipment. Richard, having previously relied on two 3.5-tonne machines, sought something more adaptable to the dynamic needs of the business.

"I always had an eye on the Avant. We tried one out, we liked it, and so we bought one. We required one we could put on a trailer and tow because we needed it at both of our sites, so we went for the 755i model because I believe it's the biggest you can legally tow. It fits great on our trailer," shares Richard. The decision to invest in the Avant 755i Loader, part of the 700 series, proved to be a game-changer for the Overton family.

Unleashing the Potential of the Avant 755i Loader: A Year-Round Workhorse

12325539461?profile=RESIZE_584xThe Avant 755i Loader, renowned for its high lift capacity and drive speed, belongs to the 700 series designed for multi-use tasks across various industries. Richard highlights the machine's ability to seamlessly transition between cleaning, property maintenance, farm operations and landscaping. Its compact design, coupled with high-flow auxiliary hydraulics, ensures unmatched versatility in handling diverse attachments.

The decision to opt for a cab-equipped model reflects the Overton family's commitment to year-round productivity. "Because we are going to be busy in the summer and the winter, we thought we needed a cab – so we could be warm in the winter but have air conditioning in the summer. We ended up buying the best machine we could get," affirms Richard. He opted for the GT cab which comes with heating, sound-absorbing interior, windscreen washer and wiper, cab air filter and front and rear mudguards as standard.

Attachments Galore: The Swiss Army Knife of Machinery

What sets the Avant 755i Loader apart is its compatibility with over 200 attachments, turning it into a true Swiss Army Knife of agricultural and landscaping equipment. Richard proudly details the array of attachments they employ, including the brush, the leveller, the lawn mower, the 4 in 1 bucket, and the root grapple. Each attachment serves a distinct purpose, showcasing the machine's adaptability.

"The root grapple isn’t just for roots; it is also used for picking up round bales of straw and logs. It has a great feature where the top grapple closes in two bits so if you have an uneven piece of wood, it doesn't just grab one side of it; it works independently, which is really clever," notes Richard.

“Just the other day we were able to deliver and unload 16 tonnes worth of slabs round the back of a private property in no time at all. Previously this would have taken 2 or 3 days of hard graft with a wheelbarrow; so, the time saving is incredible. I think the Avant Loader really is a Swiss Army Knife.”

The Avant Advantage: Cost-Effective, Economical, and Reliable

Richard emphasises the cost-effectiveness of the Avant 755i Loader, asserting, "Every machine has its limitations, but I think the Avant Loader does every job more than adequately. It has saved us money because we don't need 5 or 6 machines – the Avant can do them all." The manoeuvrability, diesel efficiency, and ability to navigate tight spaces make it an indispensable asset for the Overton family business.

In praising the local Avant dealer, Ben Burgess, Richard underlines the importance of reliable support. "Back-up is crucial when purchasing a new machine, and I get a great service from Ben Burgess.”

A Testament to Innovation and Tradition

The Avant 755i Loader stands as a testament to the innovative approach of a family business that has spanned generations. In choosing the Avant Loader, the Overton family has not only embraced a versatile and efficient tool but has also set the stage for sustained success in the years to come.

Attendees at BTME 2024, visiting DLF's stand 126 in Hall B, can anticipate a showcase of cutting-edge products from the world's premier grass seed breeder and producer.

In the face of increasing demands and pressures on modern greenkeepers to maintain a consistent playing surface, the pivotal elements for a top-tier golf course are seed quality, purity, and vigour. The MM range of seed mixtures stands out by utilising materials from the DLF Select programme, ensuring high purity and germination rates.

For over three decades, greenkeepers and course managers have reaped the benefits of choosing the MM brand and its superior quality varieties. All MM varieties undergo thorough testing at the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), guaranteeing that the final product meets the requirements for play, appearance, and maintenance.

12323287681?profile=RESIZE_584xLeading the way for golf greens is MM9, a three-way Browntop bent mixture that remains a top choice for renovations and species exchange. MM8, designed for links-style courses and sustainable golf, offers a three-way fescue mix with excellent disease resistance, drought tolerance, and minimal fertiliser requirements. MM Coastal is a great alternative to MM8 where salt spray is a concern, providing excellent salt tolerance for golf greens, tees, and fairways with its 100% Slender Creeping Red Fescue mix.

For golf course managers seeking a 100% Ryegrass Greens mix option, MM Supreme Ryegreen mix is the answer. It includes Singapore Perennial Ryegrass, known for its fine leaves, good shoot density, high disease resistance, and wear tolerance. This mix embodies the main benefits of perennial ryegrass, including fast establishment and wear tolerance in close mow situations.

If you're in search of a mixture ideal for tees and fairways, consider MM50, a 100% ryegrass blend. It boasts rapid establishment, quick recovery from divot scarring, high wear tolerance, and an extremely fine appearance. Meanwhile, for links-style fairways where damage and wear are less prevalent, MM13 is well-suited. With a high percentage of Crystal Hard Fescue, it offers excellent drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements for this challenging environment.

DLF's stand also provides information about the DLF Pro Flora and Colour Boost range of Wildflower mixtures, perfect for those looking to establish a traditional perennial flower meadow or create a vibrant display of annuals and perennials.

The MM team of amenity seed specialists will be present at BTME to discuss these products in more detail and offer their expertise to address any queries attendees may have.

Pellenc products certified LONGTIME®

Committed for many years to the durability of its products, Pellenc is pleased to announce that they have obtained LONGTIME® certification for 4 of its professional tools.

The certification includes the Helion 3 electric hedge trimmer, the Airion 3 electric blower and ULIB 1200 & 1500 batteries. It is the first manufacturer of professional tools, motors and batteries to benefit from this label.

Sustainability, a Pellenc requirement

12299253472?profile=RESIZE_584xOne of the most effective strategies to reduce the environmental impact of a product is to extend its lifespan. Pellenc has been mobilising its R&D teams for many years in order to offer equipment that is ever more durable, robust and repairable over time.

The Helion 3, the Airion 3, and the ULIB 1200 & 1500 batteries have been awarded the European LONGTIME® label after a strict and impartial control carried out by APAVE Certification.

This demanding process made it possible to assess the compliance of these products with the 41 criteria of the label, which focus on robustness, repairability and the monitoring and maintenance of the tools.

  1. The Helion 3 hedge trimmer has a reliable brushless electric motor, a robust cutterbar, and the materials of which it is composed, insensitive to corrosion, have been selected for their compatibility with intensive use and for their resistance to impacts.
  2. The Airion 3 blower features replaceable and repairable magnesium parts.
  3. The ULIB 1200 & 1500 batteries are composed of very high-capacity lithium-ion cells and offer a lifespan of more than 1,300 charge cycles.

The design of Pellenc products is based on a long service life and ease of repair under professional operating conditions. The end of life is delayed, and the environmental impact is significantly reduced. By voluntarily committing to this sustainability approach, Pellenc goes beyond the regulation of the repairability index and is fully committed to the fight against planned obsolescence and respect for the environment.

Seeding is simple with the Dennis S500

The Dennis S500 Plus seeder is helping to get the lawns into shape at Cheltenham Ladies’ College according to Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens.

After initially starting his career in greenkeeping, Ross Spry has been working for various colleges in the UK for over a decade. At Cheltenham Ladies’ College he oversees a grounds team consisting of seven members of staff who tend to the sports facilities and gardens.

Somewhat of a perfectionist, Ross recognised that the College lawns needed some attention and was quick to act.

12293553882?profile=RESIZE_584x“The lawns were not in the best shape, and there was a lot of weeds and moss, and thatch build-up in them,” he said. “We bought a scarifier and an aerator to try and alleviate this problem, but I wanted a machine to put seed back into the ground effectively rather than just broadcasting it.

“We looked at various brands of seeders and we found the Dennis S500 Plus to be the best for us.”

Ideal for bowls, cricket, golf and other fine turf and ornamental lawn areas, the dual-purpose Dennis S500 Plus has a 510mm (20″) operating width complete with interchangeable spiker and slotter reels. The spiker reel punches through the ‘surface pan’ allowing air, water and fertiliser to penetrate the root zone, while the slotter reel creates ideal seed germination pockets thus reducing seed wastage. Using the optional seed box attachment will ensure grass seed is dropped onto the ground at the prescribed rate and brushed into the pockets.

“We normally seed in the spring and autumn and before using the S500 Plus we apply a selective weedkiller to try and get rid of the weeds and moss,” said Ross.

“It is so simple to use, and it does exactly what we want it to do. It’s not heavy and it is nice and compact. Some of the lawns at the school are very small, so to have a seeder the size of the S500 Plus is ideal. It is also a lot more accurate than doing it by hand – you get more contact with the soil and better germination.

“The S500 Plus’ best feature is just how user friendly it is and it makes the task of seeding enjoyable.”

GroundsFest 2024 – Save the Date!

After the resounding success of the inaugural GroundsFest, the organising team is gearing up to make next year’s event even more spectacular.

Scheduled to take place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on September 10 and 11, GroundsFest 2024 promises to be an experience like no other.

Building on the feedback received from the first edition, the organising team is working behind the scenes to implement improvements that will elevate the event to new heights. This strategic move aims to keep the excitement levels high and provide both exhibitors and visitors with novel and engaging experiences. The goal is clear: GroundsFest 2024 will not just meet expectations but exceed them.

12293552282?profile=RESIZE_584xThe success of GroundsFest 2023 speaks volumes about the event’s unique approach. With over a 90% rebooking rate from exhibitors, it is evident that the industry has embraced the innovative event concept with open arms. According to the post-show exhibitor survey, a staggering 93% of exhibitors generated new sales leads, showcasing the event’s tangible impact on business growth.

Robbie Hayter from Net World Sports commended GroundsFest, stating, “GroundsFest is doing things differently for the industry, and I think it is refreshing. A lot of the visitors are really excited to see the outdoor demos and the festival is a great idea because you loosen up a little bit and there are more conversations and networking opportunities.”

Megan Oliver from the Howardson Group echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the appeal of seeing products in an outdoor environment. “People are loving GroundsFest and the footfall has been really good. We’ve seen people from all over the country and we’ve taken a lot of enquiries. It’s got a nice festival feel and it makes it an enjoyable place to be.”

GroundsFest visitors were equally upbeat. Christopher Mortimer from Mortimer Contracts Limited said. “It was a fantastic show – the best in years. I bought new kit and saw lots to benefit my company for the future. I also made some great contacts and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Finn Greer from Trackstars attributed GroundsFest’s success to the diversity of the event. “I think GroundsFest, being indoors and outdoors, and having such a wide variety of demos are the reasons why it has drawn such a large number of people.”

“The buzz is all about GroundsFest now,” shared Tom Duchesne from Top Garden Services, emphasising the event’s growing reputation and influence.

Marketing Director Chris Bennett highlighted the importance of industry feedback in shaping the evolution of GroundsFest. “The only way to evolve GroundsFest is by listening to the industry. This commitment to responsiveness and adaptability ensures that each edition of GroundsFest is a reflection of the evolving needs and desires of the landscaping and grounds management community.”

As anticipation builds for GroundsFest 2024, the industry can expect an event that not only celebrates the latest innovations but also sets new standards for collaboration, networking, and business growth.

GroundsFest 2024 is poised to be an unmissable highlight on the calendar for all sectors of the grounds management industry.

Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, claims that his new Dennis ES-510 cylinder mower is supporting the college’s sustainability requirements.

Ross, who has been working at Cheltenham Ladies’ College for 15 months, explained the reasons behind choosing a battery-powered cylinder mower.

“It is College policy to be sustainable. Whenever we are thinking of purchasing a new product, we must always look for an environmentally friendly option first.

“We needed a new cylinder mower and there was only one battery-powered machine we looked at. That was from Dennis because I don’t think anything else can match their mowers.”

The mower Ross was keen to look at was the Dennis ES-510. The ES-510 is based on the popular Dennis FT510. With a choice of 12 interchangeable cassettes, the ES-510 is capable of scarifying down to -10mm. Ideal for fine turf it has the power to cut 10km on a single charge.

The ES-510 features a robust LCD keypad screen on the handlebar console providing the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information. Furthermore, traditional FT510 cassettes will also fit their battery-powered alternatives, meaning that customers will not have to purchase additional cassettes.

12254135687?profile=RESIZE_584xThe aim with the Dennis E-Series is to help professionals meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, reduce carbon footprint emissions, running costs and noise without any range anxiety. Ross believes the ES-510 certainly delivers on all fronts.

“We knew we instantly wanted it following the demonstration,” he said. “It is very easy to use, and it provides an excellent cut every time. Every member of the team enjoys using the machine. Personally, I like being able to change the clip speed while I’m mowing, and the fact you can set the speed of the machine to suit your walking style is a great feature.”

The mowers take just 2 hours for an ultra-fast full battery recharge utilising a 1.5KWh battery and will help turf professionals meet sustainability and carbon neutral goals. The ultra-low HAV’s and noise allows operators to use the machines for a full day in any environment and along with the low maintenance, very low lifetime costs and significant cost savings on fuel are all benefits of the Dennis E-Series range.

“It is very comfortable to use, and you don’t get the vibrations which you get when using a petrol mower,” continued Ross.

“We predominately use it on our cricket square, but recently we used them on the College lawns during lesson time to see if we got any complaints. Normally, we would have to cut these lawns early before classes start because of the noise of the petrol mowers. Not one person said a single word after using the ES-510 because they are so quite in operation. The noise level alone is worth getting them for and these will be great for when exams are on.

“We never have any problems with the ES-510, and it is a joy to use.”

Finnish compact loader manufacturer Avant Tecno has introduced two new loader models in the popular Avant 600 series: the single-speed Avant 635i and the double-speed Avant 640i.

Both new models have the all-new Kohler KSD engine, which provides more usable power because of its electronic injection and simple operation with no exhaust after-treatment necessary.

Building on the globally recognised Avant concept of compact but mighty machines, the new Avant 635i and 640i models complete the renewal of the Avant 600 series. It is popular in many fields of work such as landscaping, farming, property maintenance, construction and demolition, and horse stables.

The new Avant 635i travels at 12 km/h, and the maximum speed of Avant 640i is 23 km/h. Both models are equipped with a certified ROPS/FOPS canopy as standard – the modern, spacious GT cab enclosure with ergonomic design is also available, providing more safety and operator comfort.

Kohler KSD engine and high oil flow

The completely new electronically controlled Kohler KSD 1403 engine is a common rail diesel engine with a displacement of 1.4 litres and an output of 26 hp / 19 kW. The engine was designed with the requirements of the latest Stage V and Tier 4 Final emission standards in mind: its power and other features have been optimised to 19 kilowatts, eliminating the need for a particulate filter.

12242944072?profile=RESIZE_584xThe three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine gives the machine plenty of torque in the low rev range. Also, there is very little power drop in high altitudes. The electronic injection adapts to varying load conditions much better than a conventional injection system.

An Avant user will notice this when doing earthmoving work with a bucket. Pushing and lifting simultaneously won’t stall the engine.

Thanks to the new diesel engine, the auxiliary hydraulics’ previous output of 50 l/min has been increased to an oil flow of 66 l/min, which is exceptionally high in this power class.

The new 635i/640i models work very well with hydraulic attachments that require higher flow, which enables an even more versatile and efficient use of the loader.

New features and a new look

The Avant 635i and 640i models have a safety-enhancing electric power distribution unit (PDU), where most of the fuses and relays are located. The safety features of the loader are now controlled by a separate electronic control unit of the loader (VECU).

In the cab, separate gauges have now been replaced by a convenient multi-function display. It provides the Avant user with varied information on the loader, such as engine speed, oil flow of auxiliary hydraulics, fuel quantity, current fuel consumption, outside temperature, hydraulic oil temperature, load alarm, total operating hours, maintenance info and fault codes. All this is available in 11 different languages.

The design of the machines and the cover panels are identical with the 645i/650i models, which makes the appearance very modern and the loaders easy to service at the same time.

Available now In Stage V and Tier 4 final countries, the new Avant 635i and 640i models replace the previous models, Avant 635 and Avant 640. In Stage 3 countries, the range will continue to include the 635 and 640 models with 37 hp Kubota engines, and the new “i” models (635i and 640i) with the Kohler KSD engine will be offered additionally.

Successful new event firmly cements itself in the groundscare calendar

After months of anticipation, GroundsFest 2023 lived up to the hype and celebrated a very memorable debut event with the groundscare community.

The atmosphere was electric as GroundsFest united every corner of the industry and brought together 6,511 unique visitors (excluding exhibitors) across the two days.

It was apparent among exhibitors and visitors that this new event was exactly what the industry needed.

The mix of indoor halls and outdoor areas certainly seemed to strike a chord with visitors. Inside, the vibrant show floor provided attendees with a great mix of exhibitors showcasing a wide range of products and services, while five seminar theatres offered a feast of free education. The Landscape Zone, an entire hall dedicated to those involved in the planning, design, and construction of outdoor environments in the landscaping sector, also proved to be a welcome addition.

12242865299?profile=RESIZE_584xThe practical demonstrations from Grounds Training were a big hit with attendees. During the two days large groups gathered round experienced instructors to learn more about pedestrian mowers, ride-on mowers, handheld machinery, and the calibration and use of knapsack sprayers and boom sprayers. Furthermore, the instructors were on hand in a large outdoor area to show visitors how to mark out a running track and speak about the essential elements of line marking sport pitches.

In the outdoor areas hundreds of exhibitors were proudly showing off their products with many new innovations being unveiled for the first ever time ahead of the 2024 season. Not only was there plenty to see on the stands but the outdoor areas provided visitors with the perfect opportunity to see a wide range of machinery and to participate in live demonstrations.

On the evening of the first day, exhibitors and visitors came together to enjoy the festival aspect of the event. With a range of food stalls, and live entertainment headlined by a very popular Queen tribute band, it was the perfect way to conclude a very special first day at GroundsFest.

Commenting on the first ever GroundsFest, Event Director Christopher Bassett, said: “On behalf of all of us at GroundsFest we really want to extend our gratitude to all our exhibitors, partners and visitors that have showed their support for the first event. From the very start we wanted GroundsFest to be an event for everyone and to be able to establish a real sense of community. Over the two days we’ve had sunshine, we’ve had rain showers, but more importantly we’ve had collaboration, built relationships, witnessed innovation at its finest and ultimately come together to celebrate the industry and have a great time with one another.

“The positive feedback has been overwhelming but we’re certainly not resting on our laurels.

We’re already planning how we can improve the event for 2024 by listening to every single piece of feedback and by analysing both the exhibitor and visitor surveys. We’ll certainly be back with GroundsFest chapter two in September 2024 and we cannot wait to welcome you all again.”
