Stuart Chalmers, Head Groundsman at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, has recently elevated his maintenance procedures with the addition of the SISIS Litamina 1200.

This innovative tractor-mounted sweeper is helping to enhance the upkeep of Scotland's only all-boys independent boarding school.

Merchiston Castle School boasts a rich tapestry of sporting facilities, including rugby, football, hockey, cricket, tennis, and a golf academy. Spanning just under 100 acres, the school's grounds present a diverse array of maintenance challenges throughout the year. Stuart, who has climbed the ranks since joining the school in 2012, understands the importance of using robust equipment to meet these challenges.

"As a school, we've long relied on SISIS equipment," remarks Stuart. "Their machines were here when I first started, and they've proven their longevity over the years. We're constantly striving to make improvements, and SISIS equipment aligns perfectly with our ethos."

12544107079?profile=RESIZE_584xThe Litamina 1200, a highly popular model in the SISIS range, has earned Stuart’s praise. "We had an older Litamina 1200 that served us well for over 10 years," he explains. "When the time came to replace it, there was no question—we opted for the same machine. It's simply that good."

With its spiral-designed brush and galvanised collection hopper, the Litamina 1200 excels in collecting a wide range of debris while delicately following ground contours. Stuart highlights the modernised features of the new model, including stands for convenient storage and enhanced practicality and ease of use.

"The Litamina 1200 has become indispensable in our maintenance routine," says Stuart. "Primarily used on our rugby and football pitches, it not only cleans the surface but also helps rejuvenate the grass, allowing for better air circulation and preparing the turf for our mowing programme."

Stuart outlines the meticulous scheduling of maintenance tasks, which often includes alternating the use of the Litamina 1200 with other SISIS equipment such as the Maxislit, a tractor-mounted deep slitting lawn aerator. "We utilise the Litamina for leaf collection as well, demonstrating its versatility and efficiency," he adds.

Ewen Wilson, Sales Manager for Scotland at SISIS, also receives praise from Stuart for his excellent service. "The support we receive from Ewen is first-class. It's reassuring to know that we have a reliable partner in SISIS."

As Merchiston Castle School prepares for exciting expansions, including a new nursery school and junior school, Stuart remains committed to maintaining pristine grounds. Navigating the challenges of turf management on heavy clay soil presents a unique set of obstacles. Andrew Butler, Head of Grounds and Gardens at Repton School in Derbyshire, understands this all too well.

Tasked with maintaining Repton's extensive grounds, Andrew has turned to Mansfield Sand's MM40 to address the specific needs of the school's clay-based terrain.

At Repton School, the soil's heavy clay composition poses challenges to turf health and drainage. Andrew explains, "We are such a heavy clay soil-based site...the clay has got compressed, and it is so heavily compacted." Recognising the importance of improving soil quality, Andrew sought solutions to enhance the medium and facilitate better water movement through the profile.

12543171273?profile=RESIZE_584xEnter MM40 from Mansfield Sand, a product renowned for its ability to improve soil structure and promote drainage. MM40 is sourced directly from the Two Oaks Quarry in Mansfield where the company produces its renowned Mansil range of Silica Sands. MM40 is a moist, medium sand which is predominantly used in the construction and maintenance of a wide range of sports surfaces.

MM40 serves as a vital tool in Repton's efforts to combat compaction and enhance turf resilience.

The implementation of MM40 extends beyond addressing surface issues. Repton School is in the midst of a comprehensive drainage programme, aiming to alleviate waterlogging and improve turf health across the entire site. Andrew emphasises the importance of this initiative, stating, "We are trying to help get that water away from the surface. It is all about improving the soil medium and getting it through the profile quicker."

The short renovation window of opportunity during Easter poses a logistical challenge for Andrew and his team. However, the application of MM40 during this period is essential to maximising its impact. Andrew explains, "We only have a short window during Easter to get as much sand in as we can. We use MM40 across all the pitches, across the whole site. It has massively helped with the drainage and improved playability."

As Repton School continues its commitment to providing top-tier facilities for its students, the role of products like MM40 in improving turf quality and resilience cannot be overstated. With Mansfield Sand's MM40 as a key ally, Andrew is ensuring that the grounds at Repton School remain a source of pride and excellence for years to come.

With over a decade of experience nurturing the hallowed grounds of the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium campus (SGM), Jim Dawson has recently embraced a significant change: the adoption of electric turf maintenance equipment, specifically the Dennis ES-860 cylinder mower, marking a shift away from traditional petrol-powered machinery.

Reflecting on his time at the iconic stadium, Head Groundsman Jim says: "I've been working here for 13 years now. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time and it's a great experience to be part of the national team." Over the years, Jim has witnessed pivotal transformations in pitch maintenance, notably the transition to a hybrid pitch, a decision made a decade ago to combat nematode issues that plagued the turf. “This new pitch was an absolute game-changer,” he adds.

The introduction of the Dennis ES-860 mowers represents a milestone in Murrayfield's sustainability journey. Jim, a long-time advocate of Dennis Mowers, explains the rationale behind the switch: "Petrol costs have gone up, and there are obviously the environmental aspects to consider - we had to weigh up the pros and cons of going down the electric route." After thorough demonstrations and evaluations, the ES-860's robust features, including extended battery life and compatibility with existing G860 mower cassettes, emerged as compelling factors for Jim.

12543138080?profile=RESIZE_584xThe Dennis ES-860, a 34" battery-powered turf

management system, epitomises versatility and efficiency. Offering a range of 13 interchangeable cassette options for tasks such as cutting, scarifying, brushing, and verticutting, it ensures optimal performance for day-to-day maintenance needs. Powered by a 48V battery, the ES-860 boasts a quick 120-minute recharge time, eliminating concerns of range anxiety during prolonged use.

Jim highlights the integration of the ES-860 into Murrayfield's operations: "The battery life is great – we can get the whole pitch cut on a single charge with no problem at all." Leveraging the versatility of the machine, Jim utilises various cassettes tailored to specific maintenance requirements. "Predominantly we use the cylinders for cutting," he explains. “The brush cassettes come in handy during the winter to remove debris from the pitch to keep it clean and we’ve also got the verticutting cassette."

12543138478?profile=RESIZE_584xOne of the standout features of the ES-860 is its ultra-quiet operation, a big advantage for Murrayfield's busy matchday preparations. Jim notes, "Because we have a lot of press and media still working and ‘on air’ a couple of hours after the full time whistle, they are always asking for us to turn the petrol mowers off! However, we can now carry on working with the ES-860's, because they are so quiet in operation." This not only enhances efficiency but also creates a more favourable working environment for the groundskeeping team. “I love how quiet the machines are – we can talk over them, and we don’t find ourselves shouting from one end of the pitch to another,” adds Jim.

Moreover, Jim commends Dennis Mowers for their exceptional service and expertise, particularly highlighting Ewen Wilson, Sales Manager for Scotland. "I receive an outstanding service from Dennis Mowers," he states. “Ewen has helped me a lot over the years and his knowledge of the equipment is fantastic.”

As Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium continues its sustainability journey, Jim says there will be more electric equipment on the way, affirming, "Battery-power is the way forward."

With market-leading turf maintenance equipment like the Dennis ES-860, Jim Dawson and his team are certainly ensuring that Scotland's rugby legacy thrives for generations to come.

Simon also emphasises the e6's performance, noting its robustness and agility. "I have put it to the test believe me," he asserts, reflecting on its ability to lift heavy items and navigate tight spaces with ease. Furthermore, its low maintenance requirements and reduced noise emissions contribute to a more favourable working environment.

Ian Royston from Farol, a trusted supplier of groundcare equipment, was instrumental in Paddington Recreation Ground’s purchase of the Avant e6. Repton School in Derbyshire is a well-known institution which mixes tradition with new ideas.

Behind the scenes, Andrew Butler, the Head of Grounds and Gardens, is the man responsible for ensuring the grounds are not just aesthetically pleasing but also resilient to the rigours of year-round sporting activities. That’s where MM Seed comes in.

After working at Repton for twelve years Andrew became the Head of Grounds and Gardens in 2022. Upon assuming his role, he faced a daunting challenge: the need for a grass seed capable of withstanding the constant onslaught of sporting activities across Repton's extensive grounds.

Repton's vast expanse, spanning over 100 acres, hosts a variety of sporting fields, including football pitches, rugby pitches, hockey pitches, athletic tracks, and cricket squares, each demanding its own maintenance. Additionally, the school boasts formal gardens and orchards, adding further complexity.

12491133465?profile=RESIZE_584xReflecting on this challenge, Andrew says, "We are on such a heavy clay-based site, and with it being a multi-sport site, it is pretty much used 12 months a year...so therefore we needed a seed with a lot of durability."

Enter MM Seed, a name synonymous with excellence in the UK sports turf and amenity industries.

“I didn’t feel that the seed which was being previously used was giving us the durability we needed,” says Andrew. “I started looking at different options, did a lot of research and we gave MM Seed a trial on our first-team football pitch. It just showed us what we were missing. Firstly, the take-up was fantastic, secondly, the durability of it was great, and the fact that it got growing well in the heavy clay-based soils we have here was very impressive.”

Andrew’s decision to switch to MM Seed, particularly utilising MM Tetra Sport and MM50, proved to be a pivotal moment.

MM Tetra Sport, a versatile blend of Diploid and Tetraploid Ryegrass, emerged as the solution for Repton's winter pitches and cricket outfield. Its ability to improve sward composition and recover from scarring perfectly complemented the school's diverse sporting calendar.

12491133856?profile=RESIZE_584xThe inclusion of Tetraploids also improved drought resistance during the summer months which is important on the cricket outfields. Meanwhile, MM50, with its fast germination, establishment and ability to withstand heavy wear plus its ability to recover quickly after use found its role on Repton's cricket squares, ensuring optimal playing conditions season after season.

Andrew elaborates further on the durability of MM Seed, “With us going from different sports throughout the year, it means we have to give the grass different heights of cut – so when you go from the height of cut on a rugby pitch down to a football pitch, down to a cricket pitch and then back up again, you are putting a lot of stress on it, but the seed copes incredibly well.”

What sets MM Seed apart is not just its performance on the field but also its commitment to innovation. Treated with HEADSTART® GOLD, a unique seaweed-based seed treatment, MM Seed ensures rapid and even germination, laying the foundation for a resilient and vibrant turf. Andrew confirms this, stating, "I think it is down to HeadStart in the mixture which gives it that extra boost."

Transitioning to a new seed variety is not without its challenges, yet Andrew found support in Agrovista Amenity, a trusted distributor of MM Seed. "Agrovista Amenity are great – I know I can ring up and have a pallet of seed here in 48 hours," he remarks, underlining the importance of reliable partnerships. He also praised the advice he received from Matt Gresty, MM Sales and Marketing Manager, “Matt came in and explained everything about the seed. I have been carrying out exactly what he said to do, and the results have been superb ever since.”

The results do indeed speak for themselves. Repton's grounds now boast not only durability but also supreme aesthetics. "The definition of stripe the seed gives us is first-class," Andrew proudly states.

Andrew’s success story highlights the importance of strategic decision-making in the turf management industry. With MM Seed, he has improved the quality of the grounds, and will continue to do so for years to come.

An ICL trial at St Andrews Links demonstrated that tank-mixing Vitalnova SMX with an H2Pro TriSmart programme significantly enhanced golf green turf quality and rootzone health, surpassing the improvements achieved by using TriSmart alone.

A trial conducted at St Andrews Links in 2022 illustrated the advantages of combining two proven technologies. Tank-mixing the seaweed biostimulant Vitalnova SMX with the non-microbial biostimulant surfactant H2Pro TriSmart programme yielded significant additional benefits. This research emphasised the capacity of the combined treatments to improve turf health, particularly during dry summer months.

The trial, employing a randomised, replicated, block design, was conducted on a Fescue-dominant golf green turf nursery underlain by a sandy rootzone. The study aimed to assess the benefits of incorporating Vitalnova SMX, a liquid biostimulant containing 10% Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed solids, into a TriSmart wetting agent programme (a product that also boasts proven biostimulant properties).

In the trial, plots treated only with TriSmart and untreated plots served as bases for statistical comparison. The trial was assessed every 2-3 weeks for turf quality, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and soil moisture content at two depths (38mm and 76mm). At the trial's conclusion, soil samples were analysed for rootzone microbial content.

12434513484?profile=RESIZE_584xOver the course of seven monthly applications from March until August, the assessment results revealed that the H2Pro TriSmart-only programme significantly increased volumetric moisture content (VMC) at both depths, as well as achieving improvements in Turf Quality and NDVI compared to the untreated plots. Most notably, the addition of Vitalnova SMX to the H2Pro TriSmart programme further enhanced Turf Quality Scores, both early and late in the season, surpassing results from the TriSmart-only treatments.

In terms of rootzone microbial analysis, the TriSmart-only treated plots contained significantly greater total bacteria, total fungi, and total microbial biomass than the untreated control plots. The combination of TriSmart and SMX significantly increased microbial biomass and total fungi beyond the already enhanced TriSmart-only results.

Key findings from the trial include:

  • The H2Pro TriSmart-only programme resulted in a significant increase in Turf Quality, % VMC (to 38mm and 76mm), and NDVI.
  • Tank-mixing Vitalnova SMX with H2Pro TriSmart significantly boosted Turf Quality Score beyond that achieved with H2Pro TriSmart alone (but did not affect the % VMC).
  • Applications of H2Pro TriSmart and Vitalnova SMX combined also resulted in a notable increase in total fungi and total microbial biomass in the rootzone.

"Our primary objective was to demonstrate the efficacy of H2Pro TriSmart in managing soil moisture levels and reducing turf stress, and to explore how Vitalnova SMX could further enhance these benefits," stated Dr Richard Collins, ICL’s International Technical Manager for Amega Sciences. "The results clearly demonstrate the advantages of integrating these products into a turf management programme, offering significant improvements in turf quality and rootzone health."

Richard concluded, "This trial not only underscores the potential of these treatments to improve turf performance during critical stress periods but also opens avenues for further research into sustainable turf management practices."

Mark Piper, the Greenkeeper at Maldon Bowling Club, Essex, has overseen a remarkable transformation in the quality of the club's green. Thanks to a range of Dennis and SISIS machinery, particularly the SISIS Supaturfman and the Dennis FT510, the once-struggling surface has become a point of pride, earning Mark the prestigious Bowls England Greenkeeper of the Year Award.

Three years ago, Maldon Bowling Club's green was plagued by bare patches and moss infestations, rendering it barely playable. The situation was disheartening for long-standing club members, prompting Mark to take action.

“It was very demoralising, especially for the people that had been at Maldon for a long time - this club has been a big part of their lives,” says Mark. “The local authority was managing the maintenance, and we weren’t really getting anywhere with them. I thought that the only way forward was to do it ourselves.”

Recognising the need for comprehensive maintenance solutions, he turned to a range of Dennis and SISIS machinery from the Howardson Group.

Key to the transformation was the SISIS Supaturfman, an independently powered heavy-duty aerator renowned for its effectiveness in sports turf maintenance. Mark credits the Supaturfman with tackling the persistent moss problem by addressing its underlying causes rather than merely treating the symptoms. Through regular aeration, the green became healthier and more resilient, laying the foundation for long-term improvement.

12426603261?profile=RESIZE_584xComplementing the Supaturfman, the Dennis FT510 emerged as an integral part of Maldon Bowling Club's maintenance equipment. Offering a 51cm working width and versatile interchangeable cassettes, the FT510 provided unparalleled flexibility and performance.

Maldon’s members are particularly impressed with the verticutting cassette according to Mark: “The more experienced bowlers like it when I use the verticutter because it gives them the pace that they want.”

Mark also highlights the FT510’s roller clutch drive and variable clip rate, which ensure a smooth finish and precise control, essential for achieving the desired playing surface quality.

Mark’s dedication, coupled with the reliability of the equipment, propelled Maldon Bowling Club to new heights, earning accolades and fostering a thriving community of bowlers.

“Membership has gone up approximately 30% in the three years that we have been doing the green, and I like to think our work has contributed towards that,” says Mark. “The club is certainly getting a much better reputation and it was nice to be able to turn it around – the Dennis and SISIS equipment has massively helped.

“What I would say to clubs who find themselves in a similar position to what we found ourselves in, is to try and go it alone – it is not as difficult as people think. If you have dedication and commitment, then the Howardson Group can help you with the rest, in terms of equipment, advice and training.”

Despite the remarkable progress, Mark remains committed to ongoing enhancement. Challenges such as excessive sand content in certain areas present opportunities for further refinement. Hosting prestigious tournaments like the Essex County 4's Finals attests to the green's newfound acclaim.

Through the integration of the SISIS Supaturfman and the Dennis FT510, Mark not only revitalised the green but also the spirit of the club. His story serves as an inspiration to greenkeepers everywhere, demonstrating that with determination and the right tools, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.

The electrification of the non-road machinery market starts most strongly in the compact machine sector. Finnish loader manufacturer Avant Tecno Oy responds to the change by taking another significant step as a pioneer in the loader world.

The new third-generation fully electric Avant loaders have batteries that are manufactured at Avant Power’s new battery factory in Ylöjärvi, Finland. Full investments have been made to develop the unique battery technology. “In five years, half of the loaders we sell may be electric,” says Jani Käkelä, CEO of Avant Tecno and Avant Power.

The compact machine market has been growing rapidly in recent years, especially in developed countries. Problems with the availability of labour and constantly tightening occupational safety regulations create more demand, to which multi-purpose compact loaders respond well.

Compact loaders can be used to work efficiently all year round, and their versatility is enhanced by a wide range of attachments. Another megatrend related to compact machines is zero emissions, which is becoming more and more prominent. This is due to the pressure created by general national and international emission targets to reduce coal use. In addition, small machines are often used partly or entirely indoors, and the work is naturally best-done emission-free for health reasons alone.

12420147865?profile=RESIZE_400xAvant Tecno has been developing electric loaders for four decades, and the company is now responding to the change with a huge development step. Avant Power, the newest subsidiary of the Avant Group, designs and manufactures batteries optimized for Avant compact loaders at the Avant factory site in Ylöjärvi, Finland. The new third-generation electric loaders have just entered production, and their lithium-ion batteries are the best on the compact loader market.

“Our own battery production gives us a unique head start in the electric loader market now and in the future. According to the fastest scenario, up to half of the loaders we sell could be electric in as little as five years. However, diesel loaders will still be needed for a long time, as some market areas will switch to electric loaders on a much slower schedule,” says Jani Käkelä, CEO of Avant Tecno and Avant Power.

The world’s only loader manufacturer with its own battery factory

Avant made the decision to start its own battery development because there was not yet a good enough battery in the world that would be a perfect fit for Avant loaders. Under Avant’s roof, there were people with the expertise required for the bold project, and eventually, these experts formed the core team of the new subsidiary.

“Now, a solid foundation for battery production has been built through hard work. We have invested heavily in product development, and we also have partners with world-class expertise. The exceptional solutions in our battery technology bring many benefits to our customers, and we will be able to respond to strong international growth in the future,” says Mikko Piepponen, COO of Avant Power, who is also responsible for creating the new technology.

Avant Power’s current facilities have served as a production development laboratory, where battery testing and manufacturing technology have been fine-tuned. Both the new battery technology and the battery factory production line have been designed by Avant Power. The same goes for most of the production equipment, which is exceptional on a global scale. Since production and the product have been designed at the same time, the whole is as simple and uncompromising as possible.

“We have used the most modern possibilities in automation and developed the production line solutions ourselves. We started production at a moderate pace, and towards the end of the year we will increase it to full speed. Next year we will manufacture 700 to 800 batteries.

12420147688?profile=RESIZE_400x “The self-designed and implemented production line enables, above all, agility, and scalability. At the same time, all expertise related to batteries and loaders is under the same roof,” says Santu Tyynelä, Chief Design Officer at Avant Power.

Currently, batteries are manufactured on one production line, but another production line has already been ordered and its installation is awaited.

The best battery on the loader market

Avant Power’s globally unique Avant OptiTemp® battery technology further improves the working time, capacity, pricing, safety, durability, and lifespan of electric loaders.

Thanks to immersion cooling technology, the batteries have excellent thermal management, which has long been one of the biggest challenges in battery technology, especially in mobile machines and equipment exposed to fluctuations in outdoor temperature. Avant OptiTemp® battery technology makes the operation of an electric loader more efficient than ever before, both in severe frosts and hot working conditions. In addition, the batteries have multi-level protection, which makes them very safe.

The operating time of electric loaders has now reached a completely new level. The new fully electric Avant e527 loader has a working time of 6 hours in optimal conditions, which is up to double compared to the previous Avant e6 electric loader. On a single charge, you can drive the new e-loader for 21 kilometres. The range is more than 60% longer than the range of the previous Avant e6.

Due to Avant’s own battery production, the new electric loaders are very competitively priced. “The loader battery is the largest single price component of the machine, and the price of battery cells is the most significant price component of batteries. With our own battery manufacturing and efficient procurement of battery cells directly from the cell manufacturer, we can significantly reduce the price of the loader. With our own company focusing on battery technology, we can also develop the battery for future needs in the best possible way,” says CEO Jani Käkelä.

New Avant e series available now

The fully electric loaders from Avant’s renewed e series – the Avant e513 (battery capacity 13 kWh) and Avant e527 (battery capacity 27 kWh) – are now in production. The domestic delivery time is about 10 weeks from the order. In export countries, the delivery time varies from country to country. More detailed information on delivery times is provided by importers.

In the world of football, the quality of the playing surface can make a significant difference in the game's outcome and the overall experience for players and spectators alike.

While top-tier stadiums often boast pristine pitches, grassroots clubs often struggle to attain the same level of excellence due to budget constraints and limited resources.

However, Charlestown Football Club, a youth football club nestled in the heart of St Austell, Cornwall, has defied this norm. Thanks to the leading MM60 grass seed their pitches have undergone a remarkable transformation, setting a new standard for grassroots football.

12404454871?profile=RESIZE_400xCharlestown Football Club, established in 1972 is a vibrant community hub with over 300 registered players aged between 5 and 16. The club prides itself on providing a nurturing environment for both boys and girls to foster their love for the beautiful game. From organising annual summer tournaments that draw teams from across Cornwall to running the Mini Soccer Centre at St Mewan Park since 2006, Charlestown FC is committed to nurturing grassroots football talent.

MM60 grass seed, renowned for its exceptional quality and performance in professional stadiums, found its way to Charlestown FC, courtesy of David Bevan from Agrovista Amenity – a distributor of MM grass seed. A 100% Ryegrass formula boasting high disease resistance, rapid germination, and superior aesthetic qualities, MM60 has proven to be a game-changer for Charlestown FC's pitches. Enhanced by Headstart® GOLD treatment, this grass seed ensures not just fast germination but also robust establishment, even under challenging conditions.

David’s journey with Charlestown FC began when his son joined the club and has since become a coach. Recognising the opportunity to contribute his expertise, David became instrumental in advising the club on pitch maintenance and renovation. Leveraging his professional knowledge, David spearheaded the adoption of MM60 for the club's pitches, emphasising the importance of investing in top-quality resources, regardless of the level of play.

12404455259?profile=RESIZE_400x“I worked on the theory that just because it is a youth football club, why shouldn’t they use the best grass seed there is and that is why I went with MM60,” said David. “Personally, I think it is the best winter sports mixture you can get. Because of the huge amount of play the pitches receive, getting sward density consistent over all of them was primarily the main reason for going with MM60. It is really hard wearing, fast germinating and I know it is quick to establish.”

As the Chairman of Charlestown FC, James Hutchings has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of MM60 grass seed on the club's pitches. Under David's guidance, the club embarked on a comprehensive renovation project, reaping the rewards of their investment in the superior grass seed.

James emphasised the invaluable role David and Agrovista Amenity have played in maximising the club's grant funding.

“As a club we have been extremely pleased with the service David and Agrovista Amenity have provided us with. David’s advice has been a bit of a godsend, and he has come along at the right time. We’ve had work done in the past but not to the level which David has been able to advise us on. Last year he took soil samples and checked the density and supplied us with MM60. It was put down at the end of May and quickly after we were seeing the benefits.

“We are very fortunate to have a very dedicated team of volunteers and we are all in agreement that it has been worth the investment. We want the pitches looking and playing on-point as much as possible. Parents have been commenting positively on how fresh everything looks, and visiting teams are asking how we are managing to have so much grass on the pitch.”

By using MM60 grass seed, Charlestown FC has set a new standard for pitch quality and performance at grassroots level. As other clubs aspire to emulate their success, Charlestown FC is proving that with passion, dedication, and the right resources, every football pitch can be one to be proud of.

Dennis ES-34R’s are perfect for FAW

Head Groundsperson James Mathewson has praised his fleet of Dennis ES-34R battery powered rotary mowers for making a difference at Colliers Park National Football Development Centre.

The centre, situated on the historic site of Gresford Colliery in Wrexham, stands as a testament to the Football Association of Wales' (FAW) commitment to fostering football talent. The facilities boast state-of-the-art training grounds making it a pivotal hub for football development.

At the helm of the grounds team is James Mathewson. His journey in the industry began at the Honourable Artillery Company in London, followed by stints at West Ham United FC and Arsenal FC’s training ground in London Colney. Post-Covid, James served as the Deputy Head Groundsperson at Northampton Saints before seizing the opportunity at Colliers Park.

In his first Head Groundsperson position, James is thriving and overseeing recent acquisitions of pitch maintenance equipment with a significant shift from petrol to battery-powered machinery. James praises the Dennis ES-34R electric rotary mowers for their role in this transition.

"The FAW has a drive towards sustainability and is very passionate about it. From a practical point of view, the ability to use the Dennis ES-34R’s on one pitch while the other pitch is in use just makes our day so much easier," says James.

12399894878?profile=RESIZE_584xThis is because the rural setting of Colliers Park presents unique challenges, including noise restrictions due to the close proximity of a hotel. James emphasises, "Having silent electric machinery, means we can cut pitches before early training sessions – it opens up our days a lot.

“There has probably been a bit of resistance over electric equipment, and I was quite sceptical when they first came out,” continues James. “Until you use it, it is very easy to think like that because everyone is so used to using petrol mowers – but the Dennis E-Series mowers are incredible machines.”

The ES-34R is a 34" (860mm) battery powered twin blade rotary mower using the latest lithium-ion battery technology. It is ideal for fine turf mowing and cleaning up operations in stadia and training facilities. Utilising the contra rotating hardened steel blades and low chute ensures maximum collection performance.

While allowing ground staff to achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface, the E-Series range will also help meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, minimise carbon footprint, emissions, running costs, HAV's and noise without any range anxiety.

"We purchased three Dennis ES-34R electric rotary mowers. I didn’t really look at other rotary mowers on the market," explains James. "Predominantly they are used to clean the pitches after training sessions. We also use them for the first few cuts after renovation before we put the cylinder mowers on.

“They put a nice stripe in the pitch which coaches and players like to see and they hoover up all the debris because they have fantastic suction.

“The best feature on these mowers is the option to increase the speed of the blade in wet weather to suck the debris up – which they do just as well as when it is dry. The size of the machine is another big plus because you can get a pitch completed with three of us in about 45 minutes on average. This would have taken three of us three hours with our previous rotary mowers.”

James also dispels concerns about battery life, stating confidently, "We can do a whole pitch on one battery. They do this with ease and that takes any anxiety out of doing the job.”

In summary, James and his team at Colliers Park National Football Development Centre have embraced the Dennis ES-34R electric rotary mowers. The shift to sustainability, coupled with the machines' efficiency and adaptability, reflects a forward-thinking approach in sports turf management

Enhancing Ganton Golf Course

Simon Olver, Course Manager at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, and his team, have spent the last few years transforming all areas of the course. He explained how alongside some significant course shaping projects, a range of products, especially Attraxor®, are playing a pivotal role in maintaining the course to the highest standards.

Having started his greenkeeping career at the age of 16, Simon's commitment to excellence led him to the position of Head Greenkeeper by the age of 19. Two decades later, he embarked on a new challenge at the prestigious Ganton Golf Club, a world-class course, ranked number 8 in England, with a rich history of hosting major competitions.

12398035077?profile=RESIZE_400xGanton's commitment to sustainability aligns with Simon's vision, aiming to create a pristine environment which is favourable for traditional golf while minimising their carbon footprint. In the pursuit of this goal, Simon acknowledges the challenges posed by the abundant options and choices available. However, he firmly believes in the principle of 'less is more,' advocating for a streamlined approach to product selection.

Enter Agrovista Amenity, a key supplier for Simon's diverse needs. Their extensive portfolio simplifies the decision-making process and among their standout products, the plant growth regulator, Attraxor® has gained prominence. Attraxor® not only optimises turf quality via excellent turf growth regulation and Poa annua suppression but also promotes root growth and enhances colour.

“Attraxor® has proved to be a fantastic addition,” said Simon. “Our aim is to minimise Poa annua in our surfaces as much as possible, while allowing us to achieve our goals. We apply it to our greens every 29 days, starting with lower application rates in spring and increasing to higher application rates in the main playing season, in line with increasing growth rates.

We then lower application rates as we approach the end of the season with decreasing rates of growth. This provides very good growth control, while allowing us to promote a healthy environment for the finer grasses over any annual meadow grass. It has delivered more consistent results across all the grass species, compared with similar products I have used in the past.”

12398035090?profile=RESIZE_400xSimon also explained how wetting agents play an integral role at Ganton.

“For the past three years we have used ICL’s TriSmart on our tees, greens, and approaches. It has been very reliable, and it allows us to deal with dry conditions and hydrophobic areas. We also use Revolution from Aquatrols, at various levels of concentration to improve the soil structure and it helps to utilise the moisture within the soil. The beauty with Revolution is that it allows the moisture to drop very low without areas becoming hydrophobic.”

As well as reporting positive results from the products, Simon praised the support and level of service he receives from Agrovista Amenity.

“We have got a very good relationship with the company, and this has strengthened over recent years working with my Agrovista Amenity specialist, Tom Wood, who is available to provide product support, such as new technologies, application rates, information on product performance in various conditions and any regulatory changes we need to be aware of.”

ICL Growing Solutions is proud to present that H2Pro TriSmart, our premium wetting agent, is also registered as a non-microbial biostimulant under the latest EU Fertilizing Product Regulation (FPR) (1009/2019).

In extensive trials and research H2Pro TriSmart has proven to significantly improve quality traits of turfgrass under drought stress conditions. The registration follows the H2Pro trials executed by the independent Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) in Bingley, United Kingdom, which demonstrated how H2Pro TriSmart improves both soil and plant quality traits. With these improvements, it is for the first time that a product is classified as both a ‘wetting agent’ and ‘non-microbial plant biostimulant’.

“Years of research and field trials have proven that the product performs exceptionally well” confirms Dr Andy Owen, ICL International Technical Manager Turf and Landscape.

“We have many years of data gathered from field trial work across the globe and university research showing how H2Pro TriSmart significantly reduces dry patch and soil hydrophobicity, maintaining turf quality and providing efficient water use. But we also wanted to focus on the benefits for turfgrass under the new fertilizer legislation”

12395896492?profile=RESIZE_584xHe continues “this comprehensive trial work allows ICL to clearly describe the benefits for the turfgrass surface that end-users can expect from selecting H2Pro TriSmart, although we are fully aware that the plant benefits come from the product’s unique ability to improve the moisture status in drought affected soils and rootzones.

Independent field trials

Four independent field trials, each with an 8 times treatment replication at the Sports Turf Research Institute, Bingley UK (STRI), demonstrated that a H2Pro TriSmart program can significantly improve quality traits of turfgrass under drought stress conditions.

Improvements of turf quality, turf color, turf uniformity, turf density and NDVI were measured for TriSmart treated plots in comparison with control (untreated plots) as well as significantly greater volumetric moisture content percentage (VMC %). The robust field data allows for the new product designation under the latest regulations.

Advantages for turf managers

The use of a surfactant-based wetting agents in a programed approach is a well-established practice for turf managers wanting the best from their turf surfaces.

Implementing H2Pro wetting agents in a turf management strategy improves 1) drought resilience of turfgrass, 2) water-use efficiency, 3) water uptake by grass plants, and 4) overall turf quality traits. H2Pro TriSmart is part of a range of ICL’s high-performance wetting agents specifically developed for turfgrass. We offer both residual and penetrant products that are suitable for all conditions and are always backed by research and user testimonials.

Turf managers that use H2Pro TriSmart in their turf management programs can be assured that the product, including the quality and high performance, has not changed. The new FPR 1009/2019 compliant label identifies the changed registration status of the product.
