This image shows my Final Design Proposal for the courtyard garden of barn conversion property in Walkington, East Yorkshire. The building is set in a 7 acre landscaped site and is owned by a member of the wealthiest family in Yorkshire. The property has recently extensively refurbished to a very high standard and features a games room, lounge, kitchen, swimming pool complex, gym and childrens play room at ground level all of which look out on the central courtyard. The axis of the garden has now been re-aligned around the main french doors from the lounge and the design also works with the principle of 'The Golden Ratio' (which the courtyard dimensions just so happen to suit!). A formal sawn slate/yorkstone terrace used for dining/outdoor cooking leads to a large synthetic lawn and stepping stones lead to a further stone terrace with seating and a coffee table. To the South facing elevation is a Merbau hardwood elevated deck area with outside sofas, coffee tables and raised stone table/plinth with an integrated 'fire-pit'. The wall is to be clad with 'Flock Wallpaper' effect canvas panels to complete the feel of an 'outdoor room'. To the left of the deck is an area resrved for the placing of an imported timber play house. The planting (except the existing retained climbers/wall shrubs and the proposed planting of hundreds of Allium bulbs) is all to be artificial as requested by the Client to reduce maintenance. The courtyard garden is now to be constructed by the Client's own in-house gardener and joiner and I look forward to seeing the results of their work sometime in 2011.

  • Err Cheers Chris!

If you read the text carefully, it states that the only 'flowers' in the scheme (Alliums) are in fact real not artificial. Anyway the artificial box topiary etc is tolerant of UV damage as I have witnessed at a local cafe near me that has had it outside for years now. The plants and lawn are synthetic because that is what the Client specifically wanted - they have another 7 acres of garden which is planted up with real plants so the local wildlife is spoilt for choice! As for the scheme not being a 'garden' - it is outside and, therfore, garden space. When briefing me, the Client asked me to 'interior design' the courtyard area and that is exactly what I did to a 't'.
  • This takes low maintenance 'gardening' a leap further than most of us would want. I don't doubt that it might look impressive, at least until the sun has bleached the plastic flowers, but it sounds more like interior decoration by Llewellyn Bowen than building a garden. Not a concession to wildlife, to seasonal change, to sensory delight...?
  • Hi David, an interesting treatment of a low maintenance courtyard. How about some Stainless Steel Alliums to prolong the growing pattern throughout the year. See: www.mikebigland.com
Good luck with the project. Mike
  • I really like the indoors outdoors feel of it. Especially the coffe table and sofas- great use of the area for relaxation. Not so sure about artificial planting throughout but will be most interested to see the final result!
