This image shows the existing courtyard garden of barn conversion property in Walkington, East Yorkshire. The building is set in a 7 acre landscaped site and is owned by a member of the wealthiest family in Yorkshire. The property has recently extensively refurbished to a very high standard and features a games room, lounge, kitchen, swimming pool complex, gym and childrens play room at ground level all of which look out on the central courtyard. The courtyard garden was only designed/landscaped three years ago by a well respected local Landscape Architect and well-known paving contractor (the paving is spot on level by the way!). Unfortunately, allthough the garden looks perfectly fine at first inspection, the formal design (which is centred on the incorrect axis i.m.h.o.) leads to a space that is little suited to a family with small children who like to entertain/enjoy the outdoor life. Also, the chosen travertine paving is almost blinding in full-sun and the extensive planting of real Boxwood hedging is suffering from Box Blight. Upon viewing my website (via. Google), the Client approached me to re-design the courtyard garden on the basis that I would also implement the construction of the garden myself on site. The brief for the new design was to include areas for lounging, outdoor cooking/dining, an artificial lawn, a children's play area, a table tennis table, a water feature and artificial plants (especially topiary) all in an area approximately 20m x 10m.
