This garden is located on the outskirts of Hull, 2 miles away from the Humber Estuary and, therefore, benefits from raised urban temperatures and a milder maritime climate. The garden is also South West facing and enclosed by fencing and the brick walls of the building so this further increases the potential hardiness of any planting there. This garden was planted 11 years ago with subtropical species such as Cordylines, Trachycarpus Fortunei, Bamboos, Fig, Bananas, Eucalyptus and Yucca etc. All planting has thrived in this environment although, if I was to do it again, next time I would omit the landscape membrane and gravel mulch and replace this with a gritty/compost mulch surface.
