Birds Nest Orchid

The name comes from the tangle of roots, resembling a bird's nest. Parasitic and lacking chlorophyll, as it does not need to photosynthesise.

  • I have only ever seen them in oak woodland. This one was taken on the bank of a sunken lane in Chanceaux près Loches. Where they do occur, they occur in large numbers. You don't tend to see just one, there will be dozens (or none). For anyone who is interested in wild orchids in France, I have a species list for our area on http://loirenature.blogspot.com/ plus details of how to identify and find them are being added all the time.
