I use some pretty cheap software called "Punch! Patio and Deck Designer". For the money it is super powerful and accepts dwg files etc too. I've been using it for 5 years, so since before google sketchup, and I have never used google sketchup so i have no idea how they compare, but i have trialed some other CAD software and in terms of value for money Punch is excellent.
I'll be trialling Sketchup in the quieter winter months though to see what all the fuss is about!
