Curved pergolas

A small seaside garden with a curved oak pergola. To create the curved 'top' we always use a wide steel band to bend around - either powder coated in black or (as in this case) left to rust. Then it's been covered with white Solanum and Clematis armandii. A good little retreat.

  • And of course, the other option is to have the circle cut from a solid piece of wood. I spec'd this once for a solid oak pergola, but it's a very expensive route.
  • Hi Sarah

The problem with wooden circles is that you either have them looking like octagons or have to use something like a marine ply that could be bent, or cut slightly through. This has no longevity. I source the steel from a metal worker. Any metal company can make it for you. Have it made in sections, but make sure you accurately measure the distance between your posts. It has to be made in sections for transport. I usually specify 3mm thick so that it will bend well. If you give me your email address I wil send you a picture of another band I did recently as it was fitted. Happy to help. Louisa

  • Really lovely.  I am planning a garden with a similar feature, was looking at all wood circular pergolas, but that is a good alternative.  How wide was the steel band, and where did you source it from? Do you have a pic of what it looked like before the climbers grew on it? (sorry if that is a bit of a cheeky request!)
