Bad paving job or work of art?

On the face of it this cobble paving is a disaster. The surface is uneven, the lines aren't straight and the sizes don't match. One could easily dismiss this as a poor paving job. However it is hundreds of years old and has stood the test of time. To me it's a masterpiece that would be hard to replicate.
