    Hi Elspeth

This is plant Ricin (Castor Oil Plant) and it is used extensively here in France as an ornamental plant. You will see it in many towns and villages and on a sunny day the the colours in the leaves really come to life.

The bean it produces is highly poisonous and it was this poison that was used to kill the Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov in London in 1978.

The plant also became very popular in the UK in the nineties and I planted it on numerous occasions.

The warmer and more humid the climate the better the plant will grow.
  • Could anyone tell me what this is please? I found it in the Oxford Botanic gardens. Such vibrant colours - amazing. I couldnt find a label though :o(
