Their use has now come to the fore with the pressure on users to reduce the volume of pesticides they are applying, together with the loss of key active ingredients.

The biggest development in biopesticides has been within parasitic nematodes and their use to target important pest species. Nematodes are microscopic worm like insects that seek out pests in soil, using their bodies as hosts to reproduce and killing them in the process. ProGreen have a close working relationship with Dr Minshad Ansari; the founder of Bionema, a leading expert in nematodes and the originator of the NemaTrident range. We now have available a range of nematode species targeting a broad spectrum of pests, most importantly Chafer Grub, Leatherjackets and Black Vine Weevil. They are available in season specific types as different nematode species are active at different soil temperatures.

A unique and important addition to the ProGreen NemaTrident products is the inclusion of the NemaSpreader adjuvant with every pack. NemaSpreader is a surfactant, which helps the nematodes move through the soil and find their target. The use of the NemaSpreader has been shown to increase the level of control by up to 30%. Most importantly it is not detrimental to the nematodes themselves as can be the case many other adjuvants.

The NemaTrident range continues to develop, improve and become an integral part to many IPM strategies.

Keys to success:

Ensure that the nematodes are stored correctly and once received they should be applied as soon as possible. Storage temperatures should be between 5-10℃.

Correct application is very important, apply with the NemaSpreader and follow the on pack instructions closely. Further application advice is available on the relevant NemaTrident listings at progreen.co.uk.

It is important to remember that all filters must be removed from the sprayer and that the sprayer lines and tank should be thoroughly cleaned prior to application.

To ensure maximum efficacy avoid applying in bright sunlight and, after application, the soil surface should be kept moist for approximately two weeks.

For further information on the NemaTrident range and our wider range of biological controls, please get in touch with us via our website www.progreen.co.uk or via our advice line on 01778 394052.
