If you cast your mind back to the weekend before last, we had a glimpse of spring, it was lovely! So, what can you do in the garden?

The best thing to do at the moment is to put some food and water out for the birds. They will struggle in this weather for any nourishment and liquid. If you have tools, now would be a good time to clean them up and sharpen as needed. A light coating of oil will keep rust at bay whilst being hung up in the shed in preparation for the coming season.

When the snow disappears at the weekend the temperatures are set to rise, for a while at least!

This will be a good time, if you haven't already, to mulch bare soil with organic matter, such as well rotted farmyard manure, garden compost, cocoa shells, chipped bark or spent mushroom compost( not the latter around acid loving plants, such as rhododendrons). By doing this the soil will be improved and it will reduce evaporation in the drier months, cutting down on the need to water, as well as suppressing weeds - great!

In addition you could also prune overgrown evergreens, bush roses, shrub roses, late flowering shrubs (such as Buddleja) and also prune group 3 Clematis. Later in March would be the time to plant and divide perennials, cut old seed heads and sow hardy annuals.

So spring is around the corner! We at Sublime Gardening are taking bookings for garden maintenance in Thanet and the surrounding areas. It won't be long before the first cuts of the lawns and it's a good idea to get booked in for any hedges to be trimmed before the nesting season.

A professional gardener can look after your garden for you if you don't have time to or are unable to.

What sets us apart form others you may ask? Well, we are reliable, friendly, hard working, strive for the best for the customer and, very importantly, we are insured to the figure of £2,000,000. I'll endeavour to do at least one a month from now on.

Paul
