Prizes valued at more than £10,000 are on offer, including the coveted £2,000 Percy Thrower Travel Bursary prize for the winner, provided by the Shropshire Horticultural Society which also generously sponsors the Grand Final.

The Bursary funds a study trip anywhere in the world. The competition is open to any horticulturist who is below the age of 30 on 31 July 2014 including professional horticulturists and anyone studying for a horticultural qualification. There are three ways to take part: attend a heat at a venue in your local area; in your work place, with an Institute of Horticulture approved supervisor; or via Skype. The closing date for entries is 25 February. For more information and a trial run of some previous heat questions visit: http://www.horticulture.org.uk/page.php?pageid=562

This year’s competition is forecast to be the biggest ever, with well over 2,000 young horticulturists participating. The heats, to test entrants’ range of horticultural knowledge, are taking place now across Great Britain and Ireland, in the form of 40 multi-choice questions, via a PowerPoint presentation. The heats will then be followed by eight Regional Finals, held in March, which culminate in the Grand Final on 10 May at the John Innes Centre, Norwich (www.jic.ac.uk).

2013 winner, Jez Stamp, said ‘It was an excellent competition that highlights all the exciting opportunities that horticulture has to offer as a career. Plants are my passion. I have thrown myself in 100% and am proud to have won this competition. My travel bursary will give me a chance to continue my studies of woody plants and I will be looking at Western China and Taiwan as possible locations.’

Total sponsorship this year has exceeded £20,000 for the first time. The Shropshire Horticultural Society is the major sponsor, who through the Percy Thrower Trust, provide the Travel Bursary prize and also the considerable sponsorship of the Grand Final. 2014 marks the 25th Anniversary of the signing of the agreement between the Institute of Horticulture and the Percy Thrower Trust.

Transforming London’s Royal Docks with water sensitive urban design – new open ideas design competition is announcedhttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/transforming-london--royal-docks-landscape-institute-ecobuild2013-11-07T12:33:24.000Z2013-11-07T12:33:24.000ZLandscape Juicehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/LandscapeJuice

Registration opens today to find new design ideas for London’s Royal Docks. The Landscape Institute and Ecobuild, with support from the Mayor of London and London Borough of Newham, have launched ‘The Royal Docks Ideas Competition’ to find innovative design proposals that would transform the Royal Docks into a multi-functional, ‘liveable’ space. Comprised of three docks in East London - Royal Albert Dock, Royal Victoria Dock and King George V Dock – the Royal Docks is the largest enclosed docks in the world with a water area of nearly 90 hectares.

The judging panel want entrants to incorporate green infrastructure and water sensitive design ideas into their proposals in an effort to make the area more resilient against environmental, social and economic challenges and to transform it into a world class location.

Redundant docks have proved to be ideal regeneration projects – Canary Wharf, Salford Quays and the Albert Dock are all waterside-led regeneration success stories. But the docks at the centre of these schemes are left untouched as big, empty swathes of water that are hardly used by the occupiers of these new developments. The Royal Docks offer the potential to provide a range of functions including water activities, parkland and development space, to enhance ecosystems, improve connections between land and water and food production.

The Mayor of London is preparing to seek a development partner to deliver a floating village at the western end of Royal Victoria Dock. At 4km, the Royal Docks are the length of Central Park, and offer almost 90 hectares of water space with enormous potential to be brought to life.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “London’s Royal Docks, historically the throbbing arteries of UK trade and commerce, present a huge opportunity which I’m determined to capitalise on. My vision is to develop a world class innovation and business district, creating local jobs, homes and economic growth. On the docks we’re already taking great strides to achieve this. On the water, with some imagination and creativity, the possibilities are endless.”

Speaking about the competition Sue Illman, President of the Landscape Institute, said; “We hope this competition will help us to ask questions and promote debate about how we should plan and manage more ‘liveable’ cities and urban centres in the future. We want the competition to demonstrate how a landscape-led approach to design can transform the public realm – making cities more prosperous and resilient. Entrants need to embrace green infrastructure and water sensitive urban design and demonstrate how they can help transform the area into a better place to live and work.”

Thomas Lane, Group technical editor, Building & Ecobuild said: “Ecobuild is the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment. Excel, situated on the Royal Docks, has been our home for the last 4 years. It is very exciting for us to be turning our attention to this familiar neighbourhood and showcasing what a sustainable Royal Docks might look like.”

Victoria Thornton OBE, Founding Director of Open-City said: “It is clear through our sustainability programme Green Sky Thinking Week that London must embrace innovative design solutions to ensure we create a future London that is vibrant and liveable for all its citizens. We are delighted to support the Open Ideas Competition that recognizes the importance of a cross-disciplinary and community enriching design.”

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham said: "London is moving eastwards and the Royal Docks offer an investment opportunity in scale unmatched anywhere in Europe. This exciting competition is a pivotal part of their reanimation.

The Docks are being transformed into a living, working community of high quality offices, workspace, retail, residential spaces, leisure and entertainment facilities. They will become a vibrant, exciting and fun visitor attraction which will draw people not just from across the capital - but across the country. They are providing a major boost for the local economy and the area fully deserves its reputation as one of the capital’s must-visit places."

The judging panel includes Sue Illman, President of the Landscape Institute, Thomas Lane, Group technical editor, Building & Ecobuild, Ric Blakeway, Deputy Mayor of London (Housing, Land and Property), Peter Barbalov, Partner Farrells, Victoria Thornton, CEO of London Open City and Colm Lacey, Head of Regeneration, London Borough of Newham.

The competition is open to all individuals and teams. Entrants should not be constrained by restrictions including current planning law and land ownership issues. The design ideas should innovate, inspire and challenge, but entrants are encouraged to consider the practicalities of realising their scheme.

The competition is sponsored by Marshalls plc the UK’s leading manufacturer of hard landscaping products. The deadline for submissions is 6 January 2014. The winners will be announced at Ecobuild on the 5 March 2014. The winner will receive £2,000, second prize is £1,000 and four runners-up will receive £500 each. The top 20 designs will be exhibited at Ecobuild, which takes place from the 4-6 March at the Excel Centre.

Grant of a Royal Charter to the Institute of Horticulturehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profiles/blogs/grant-of-a-royal-charter-to-the-institute-of-horticulture2013-07-16T17:30:00.000Z2013-07-16T17:30:00.000ZLandscape Juicehttps://landscapejuicenetwork.com/profil/LandscapeJuice

The Institute of Horticulture (IoH) is delighted to announce that Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to grant a Royal Charter to the Institute of Horticulture. The Institute's Royal Charter will come into legal effect when it is sealed by the Crown Office at the House of Lords. It is expected that this will be completed in the New Year 2014.

The granting of a Royal Charter has been an aspiration of the Institute since its inception in 1984 in view of the major benefits it will bring to the Institute and its members. A Royal Charter will enhance the Institute’s ability to present our profession through increasing the profile, recognition and standing of professional horticulture. As a Chartered body the Institute’s ability to raise standards will be strengthened and the Institute will be better placed to represent and support horticulture as a profession and assist members in the practice of the profession.

On becoming a Chartered Institute in 2014 all members will retain their existing membership level but will also have the benefits associated with membership of a Chartered body. However, the Royal Charter equips the Institute with the new ability to award individual Chartered status to members of the Institute. This new prospect would be optional for members to apply for should they choose. Individual Chartered status will recognise the achievement of a senior practitioner level and this will support members by confirming their high level of professional expertise. This has the major potential to help individuals in all aspects of the Industry.

Leigh Morris FI Hort, Institute of Horticulture President commented: “The IoH is THE body representing professional horticulture and being granted a Royal Charter will reflect that to a much wider audience. Such status will undoubtedly give our members a higher status, stimulate more to join us, give the IoH much greater gravitas in our advocacy for the industry and it is something the horticulture profession deserves. The work done to date by IoH Council on taking this forward on behalf of horticulture is tremendous and all of us should recognise their vision and application in achieving this. The Institute has raised the bar for professional horticulture in the UK and Ireland. This is a landmark moment and exciting times ahead!”

Further updates on the production of our Charter and its sealing will be given in The Horticulturist, the e-Horticulturist and IoH social media channels (#IoHChartership). However if you have any questions please feel free to contact HQ direct: Tel 01992 707025 or e-mail ioh@horticulture.org.uk

She was responding to the call for evidence issued by the Farrell Review of Architecture and the Built Environment. Illman said: 'In a world confronted by rapidly expanding urban populations, scarce resources, environmental and economic challenges, it is disappointing to learn that the first such review since 2000 asks no questions about the role of government in creating sustainable environments or about transport, infrastructure, SMART cities, green infrastructure, water-sensitive design, place-making or many other established features of progressive urban design. The cities in which we live are not composed just of buildings. We have a relationship with the natural and ecological forces that influence the structure and working of our cities.

100 quirky, green and sometimes plausible ideas for how London’s landscapes could be improved by green infrastructure go live this week on a new website launched by the Landscape Institute, and visitors to this year’s Ecobuild (Excel 5-7 March 2013) are being asked to nominate their favourite design.

New London Landscape allows visitors to explore the 100 previously unseen designs from the recent ‘High Line for London’ competition run by the Landscape Institute in partnership with the Mayor of London and Garden Museum last October.

Visitors to the site will also be able to post comments about individual designs and strike up conversations with the designers. “We want to start a conversation about London – these designs may never be built, but our aim is to change the way Londoners look at and think about their city. Sometimes dreaming about what’s possible can help us focus on what is possible.

All kinds of amazing ideas are possible and this competition shifts the debate away from things which are mundane and easy to deliver. It challenges us to think creatively and imagine our city in a much more exciting way.” said Sue Illman, President of the Landscape Institute.

Whilst the 20 shortlisted ideas, including Fletcher Priest Architects’ winning mushroom garden ‘Pop Down’ are well-known to the public the other design ideas have never been seen before. Taken together the ideas provide a unique ‘green’ vision of the capital. New London Landscape is a first for London – a collective ‘green’ vision by some of the best and brightest designers, landscape architects, architects and green campaigners working today. It reveals a new ‘greener’ London with an exciting range of new spaces including micro orchards at bus shelters, pleasure gardens over the Thames, linear parks, elevated cycle paths and floating gardens. Some of the previously unseen designs include an idea to transform the old Eurostar building into a year-round arboretum and butterfly house; Grape London, which proposes planting a linear vineyard across London and Victus Pontis, an installation that spans the Thames where medieval London Bridge once did and includes hi-tech biomes and a bridge of food and life.

Nominate your favourite design idea anytime between the 5th and 7th March by visiting the Landscape Institute stand S1838 at Ecobuild, the world’s biggest event for sustainable design, construction and the built environment. The top ten nominated designs will be revealed online on Monday 11th March.
